1 ᾄσω δὴ τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ ᾆσμα τοῦ ἀγαπητοῦ τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου ἀμπελὼν ἐγενήθη τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ ἐν κέρατι ἐν τόπῳ πίονι 2 καὶ φραγμὸν περιέθηκα καὶ ἐχαράκωσα καὶ ἐφύτευσα ἄμπελον σωρηχ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησα πύργον ἐν μέσῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ προλήνιον ὤρυξα ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι σταφυλήν ἐποίησεν δὲ ἀκάνθας 3 καὶ νῦν ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Ιουδα καὶ οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν Ιερουσαλημ κρίνατε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ἀμπελῶνός μου 4 τί ποιήσω ἔτι τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησα αὐτῷ διότι ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι σταφυλήν ἐποίησεν δὲ ἀκάνθας 5 νῦν δὲ ἀναγγελῶ ὑμῖν τί ποιήσω τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου ἀφελῶ τὸν φραγμὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσται εἰς διαρπαγήν καὶ καθελῶ τὸν τοῖχον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσται εἰς καταπάτημα 6 καὶ ἀνήσω τὸν ἀμπελῶνά μου καὶ οὐ μὴ τμηθῇ οὐδὲ μὴ σκαφῇ καὶ ἀναβήσεται εἰς αὐτὸν ὡς εἰς χέρσον ἄκανθα καὶ ταῖς νεφέλαις ἐντελοῦμαι τοῦ μὴ βρέξαι εἰς αὐτὸν ὑετόν 7 ὁ γὰρ ἀμπελὼν κυρίου σαβαωθ οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ ἐστίν καὶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Ιουδα νεόφυτον ἠγαπημένον ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι κρίσιν ἐποίησεν δὲ ἀνομίαν καὶ οὐ δικαιοσύνην ἀλλὰ κραυγήν | 1 A song, now, in honour of one that is my good friend; a song about a near kinsman of mine, and the vineyard that he had. This friend, that I love well, had a vineyard in a corner of his ground,[1] all fruitfulness. 2 He fenced it in, and cleared it of stones, and planted a choice vine there; built a tower, too, in the middle, and set up a wine-press in it. Then he waited for grapes to grow on it, and it bore wild grapes instead. 3 And now, citizens of Jerusalem, and all you men of Juda, I call upon you to give award between my vineyard and me. 4 What more could I have done for it? What say you of the wild grapes it bore, instead of the grapes I looked for? 5 Let me tell you, then, what I mean to do to this vineyard of mine. I mean to rob it of its hedge, so that all can plunder it, to break down its wall, so that it will be trodden under foot. 6 I mean to make waste-land of it; no more pruning and digging; only briars and thorns will grow there, and I will forbid the clouds to water it. 7 Alas, it is the house of Israel that the Lord called his vineyard; the men of Juda are the plot he loved so. He looked to find right reason there, and all was treason; to find plain dealing, and he heard only the plaint of the oppressed. | 1 Cantabo dilecto meo canticum patruelis mei vineæ suæ. 8 οὐαὶ οἱ συνάπτοντες οἰκίαν πρὸς οἰκίαν καὶ ἀγρὸν πρὸς ἀγρὸν ἐγγίζοντες ἵνα τοῦ πλησίον ἀφέλωνταί τι μὴ οἰκήσετε μόνοι ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς 9 ἠκούσθη γὰρ εἰς τὰ ὦτα κυρίου σαβαωθ ταῦτα ἐὰν γὰρ γένωνται οἰκίαι πολλαί εἰς ἔρημον ἔσονται μεγάλαι καὶ καλαί καὶ οὐκ ἔσονται οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν αὐταῖς 10 οὗ γὰρ ἐργῶνται δέκα ζεύγη βοῶν ποιήσει κεράμιον ἕν καὶ ὁ σπείρων ἀρτάβας ἓξ ποιήσει μέτρα τρία 11 οὐαὶ οἱ ἐγειρόμενοι τὸ πρωὶ καὶ τὸ σικερα διώκοντες οἱ μένοντες τὸ ὀψέ ὁ γὰρ οἶνος αὐτοὺς συγκαύσει 12 μετὰ γὰρ κιθάρας καὶ ψαλτηρίου καὶ τυμπάνων καὶ αὐλῶν τὸν οἶνον πίνουσιν τὰ δὲ ἔργα κυρίου οὐκ ἐμβλέπουσιν καὶ τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ οὐ κατανοοῦσιν 13 τοίνυν αἰχμάλωτος ὁ λαός μου ἐγενήθη διὰ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι αὐτοὺς τὸν κύριον καὶ πλῆθος ἐγενήθη νεκρῶν διὰ λιμὸν καὶ δίψαν ὕδατος 14 καὶ ἐπλάτυνεν ὁ ᾅδης τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ διήνοιξεν τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ διαλιπεῖν καὶ καταβήσονται οἱ ἔνδοξοι καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι καὶ οἱ πλούσιοι καὶ οἱ λοιμοὶ αὐτῆς 15 καὶ ταπεινωθήσεται ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἀτιμασθήσεται ἀνήρ καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ οἱ μετέωροι ταπεινωθήσονται 16 καὶ ὑψωθήσεται κύριος σαβαωθ ἐν κρίματι καὶ ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἅγιος δοξασθήσεται ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ 17 καὶ βοσκηθήσονται οἱ διηρπασμένοι ὡς ταῦροι καὶ τὰς ἐρήμους τῶν ἀπειλημμένων ἄρνες φάγονται | 8 Woe upon you, that must ever be acquiring house after house, field after neighbouring field, till all the world goes wanting! Would you have the whole land to yourselves to live in? 9 The news of all this has reached me, says the Lord of hosts; see if I do not leave these many houses, these fine great houses of yours, lonely and untenanted. 10 Wait, till you find ten acres of vine-land yielding but one flagon of wine, thirty bushels of seed-corn yielding but three. 11 Woe upon you, the men who must be up betimes to go a-drinking, and sit late into the evening, till you are heated with wine! 12 Still you must have zither and harp, tambour and flute and wine for your entertainment; you give no thought to God’s dealings, to the world his hands have made. 13 It is this inconsiderateness that has made my people homeless exiles, their nobles starving, and common folk parched with thirst; 14 that is why the abyss hungers for you, opens its greedy jaws, till all alike, the nobles of Sion and her common sort, that boast and triumph now, go down to its depths. 15 The low-born must fall, the high-born abate his pride; the eyes of the boaster will be downcast; 16 doom, by which the Lord of hosts will be exalted, just award, by which the God of holiness will shew holier yet! 17 There, with his flocks browsing undisturbed, the stranger shall enjoy the rich pastures you left a wilderness. | 8 Væ qui conjungitis domum ad domum, et agrum agro copulatis usque ad terminum loci! Propterea dilatavit infernus animam suam, et aperuit os suum absque ullo termino; et descendent fortes ejus, et populus ejus, et sublimes gloriosique ejus, ad eum. Et incurvabitur homo, et humiliabitur vir, et oculi sublimium deprimentur. Et exaltabitur Dominus exercituum in judicio; et Deus sanctus sanctificabitur in justitia. Et pascentur agni juxta ordinem suum, et deserta in ubertatem versa advenæ comedent. |
18 οὐαὶ οἱ ἐπισπώμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας ὡς σχοινίῳ μακρῷ καὶ ὡς ζυγοῦ ἱμάντι δαμάλεως τὰς ἀνομίας 19 οἱ λέγοντες τὸ τάχος ἐγγισάτω ἃ ποιήσει ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ ἐλθάτω ἡ βουλὴ τοῦ ἁγίου Ισραηλ ἵνα γνῶμεν 20 οὐαὶ οἱ λέγοντες τὸ πονηρὸν καλὸν καὶ τὸ καλὸν πονηρόν οἱ τιθέντες τὸ σκότος φῶς καὶ τὸ φῶς σκότος οἱ τιθέντες τὸ πικρὸν γλυκὺ καὶ τὸ γλυκὺ πικρόν 21 οὐαὶ οἱ συνετοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐνώπιον ἑαυτῶν ἐπιστήμονες 22 οὐαὶ οἱ ἰσχύοντες ὑμῶν οἱ τὸν οἶνον πίνοντες καὶ οἱ δυνάσται οἱ κεραννύντες τὸ σικερα 23 οἱ δικαιοῦντες τὸν ἀσεβῆ ἕνεκεν δώρων καὶ τὸ δίκαιον τοῦ δικαίου αἴροντες | 18 Woe upon you, that lightly harness yourselves to ill-doing, and draw down upon you, as with a strong rope, its guilt! 19 What is this, you say, that the Holy One of Israel threatens? Quick, no waiting; let us know the worst, and with all speed! 20 Woe upon you, the men who call evil good, and good evil; whose darkness is light, whose light darkness; who take bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe upon you, that think yourselves wise, and boast of your own foresight! 22 Woe upon you, heroes of the tankard, brave hearts round the mixing-bowl, 23 that take bribes to acquit the guilty, and rob the innocent of his rights! | 18 Væ qui trahitis iniquitatem in funiculis vanitatis, et quasi vinculum plaustri peccatum! qui dicitis: Festinet, et cito veniat opus ejus, ut videamus; et appropiet, et veniat consilium sancti Israël, et sciemus illud! 24 διὰ τοῦτο ὃν τρόπον καυθήσεται καλάμη ὑπὸ ἄνθρακος πυρὸς καὶ συγκαυθήσεται ὑπὸ φλογὸς ἀνειμένης ἡ ῥίζα αὐτῶν ὡς χνοῦς ἔσται καὶ τὸ ἄνθος αὐτῶν ὡς κονιορτὸς ἀναβήσεται οὐ γὰρ ἠθέλησαν τὸν νόμον κυρίου σαβαωθ ἀλλὰ τὸ λόγιον τοῦ ἁγίου Ισραηλ παρώξυναν 25 καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ κύριος σαβαωθ ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπέβαλεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτούς καὶ παρωξύνθη τὰ ὄρη καὶ ἐγενήθη τὰ θνησιμαῖα αὐτῶν ὡς κοπρία ἐν μέσῳ ὁδοῦ καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις οὐκ ἀπεστράφη ὁ θυμός ἀλ{L'} ἔτι ἡ χεὶρ ὑψηλή | 24 See how stubble is eaten away by the fire that licks round it, melting away into the heat of the flame; so the root of them will turn to smouldering embers, and the fruit of them will go up like flying ashes; men who reject the law of the God of hosts, who defy every warning from the Holy One of Israel. 25 That is why the Lord’s anger against his people has been so fierce; that is why his hand has been raised to smite them, so that the mountains trembled at it, and corpses lay unregarded like dung in the streets. But even so his anger is not yet appeased, his hand threatens us still. | 24 Propter hoc, sicut devorat stipulam lingua ignis, et calor flammæ exurit, sic radix eorum quasi favilla erit, et germen eorum ut pulvis ascendet; abjecerunt enim legem Domini exercituum, et eloquium sancti Israël blasphemaverunt. 26 τοιγαροῦν ἀρεῖ σύσσημον ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τοῖς μακρὰν καὶ συριεῖ αὐτοῖς ἀ{P'} ἄκρου τῆς γῆς καὶ ἰδοὺ ταχὺ κούφως ἔρχονται 27 οὐ πεινάσουσιν οὐδὲ κοπιάσουσιν οὐδὲ νυστάξουσιν οὐδὲ κοιμηθήσονται οὐδὲ λύσουσιν τὰς ζώνας αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ὀσφύος αὐτῶν οὐδὲ μὴ ῥαγῶσιν οἱ ἱμάντες τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτῶν 28 ὧν τὰ βέλη ὀξεῖά ἐστιν καὶ τὰ τόξα αὐτῶν ἐντεταμένα οἱ πόδες τῶν ἵππων αὐτῶν ὡς στερεὰ πέτρα ἐλογίσθησαν οἱ τροχοὶ τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτῶν ὡς καταιγίς 29 ὁρμῶσιν ὡς λέοντες καὶ παρέστηκαν ὡς σκύμνος λέοντος καὶ ἐπιλήμψεται καὶ βοήσει ὡς θηρίου καὶ ἐκβαλεῖ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ ῥυόμενος αὐτούς 30 καὶ βοήσει δ{I'} αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ὡς φωνὴ θαλάσσης κυμαινούσης καὶ ἐμβλέψονται εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ ἰδοὺ σκότος σκληρὸν ἐν τῇ ἀπορίᾳ αὐτῶν | 26 And now he will raise up among the distant nations one people to be a signal to the rest;[2] he will whistle it up from the ends of the earth, swiftly and suddenly it will answer his call. 27 Not a man in those ranks that will faint or lag behind; none grows weary or falls asleep; never a belt is unbuckled, never a shoe-string loosed. 28 Sharp arrows this people has, and all its bows are ready bent; it has horses with hoofs like flint, and chariot-wheels like the rushing of the storm. 29 No lion roars so loud; it will roar as lion-cubs do, growling and holding its prey fast, encircling it so that none can bring rescue. 30 Sounds of dread shall usher in that day, loud as the roaring of the sea; look where you will, all shall be dark with misery; light itself will be darkened by the shadow of its coming. | 26 Et elevabit signum in nationibus procul, et sibilabit ad eum de finibus terræ: et ecce festinus velociter veniet. [1] Literally, ‘a horn, the son of oil’. The word ‘horn’ is generally interpreted here as a hill; but a rocky crag such as the word would indicate would be no place for a vineyard.
[2] This is the only possible way of translating the Hebrew text as it stands; but it seems likely that the word ‘nations’ has been written, through a copyist’s error, instead of ‘nation’. In that case the passage would run quite simply: ‘And now he will raise a signal to a nation that is far away; he will whistle it up …’ etc.
