1 λῆμμα λόγου κυρίου ἐπὶ τὸν Ισραηλ λέγει κύριος ἐκτείνων οὐρανὸν καὶ θεμελιῶν γῆν καὶ πλάσσων πνεῦμα ἀνθρώπου ἐν αὐτῷ 2 ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ τίθημι τὴν Ιερουσαλημ ὡς πρόθυρα σαλευόμενα πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς κύκλῳ καὶ ἐν τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ ἔσται περιοχὴ ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ 3 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ θήσομαι τὴν Ιερουσαλημ λίθον καταπατούμενον πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν πᾶς ὁ καταπατῶν αὐτὴν ἐμπαίζων ἐμπαίξεται καὶ ἐπισυναχθήσονται ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τῆς γῆς 4 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ πατάξω πάντα ἵππον ἐν ἐκστάσει καὶ τὸν ἀναβάτην αὐτοῦ ἐν παραφρονήσει ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν οἶκον Ιουδα διανοίξω τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἵππους τῶν λαῶν πατάξω ἐν ἀποτυφλώσει 5 καὶ ἐροῦσιν οἱ χιλίαρχοι Ιουδα ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν εὑρήσομεν ἑαυτοῖς τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ιερουσαλημ ἐν κυρίῳ παντοκράτορι θεῷ αὐτῶν 6 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ θήσομαι τοὺς χιλιάρχους Ιουδα ὡς δαλὸν πυρὸς ἐν ξύλοις καὶ ὡς λαμπάδα πυρὸς ἐν καλάμῃ καὶ καταφάγονται ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων πάντας τοὺς λαοὺς κυκλόθεν καὶ κατοικήσει Ιερουσαλημ ἔτι κα{Q'} ἑαυτήν 7 καὶ σώσει κύριος τὰ σκηνώματα Ιουδα καθὼς ἀ{P'} ἀρχῆς ὅπως μὴ μεγαλύνηται καύχημα οἴκου Δαυιδ καὶ ἔπαρσις τῶν κατοικούντων Ιερουσαλημ ἐπὶ τὸν Ιουδαν | 1 Burden of the Lord’s doom, where falls it now? On Israel. Word from the Lord, who spread heaven out, founded earth, fashions the life that beats in man! 2 This is my decree, that Jerusalem’s walls (ay, and the whole of Juda shall man those ramparts) be offered to all the nations round about for a fatal cup;[1] 3 to all the world Jerusalem shall be a stone immoveable; lift it who will, shall be torn unmercifully. See where they muster to the attack, all the kingdoms of the world! 4 Time now, the Lord says, to dazzle steed and craze rider’s wits; for Juda, the sunshine of my regard, the heathen must ride in darkness. 5 Vainly do yonder chieftains of Juda look to the garrison of Jerusalem to be their succour, in the strength of the Lord their God; 6 chieftains of Juda themselves shall be my instruments then, fire-brand in the forest, spark among the dry sheaves, to devour all the nations right and left of them. Jerusalem shall stand, when all is over, where Jerusalem stood; 7 but to the country folk of Juda the Lord grants deliverance first; clan of David, citizens of Jerusalem shall not boast themselves better than the rest.[2] | 1 Onus verbi Domini super Israël. Dicit Dominus extendens cælum, et fundans terram, et fingens spiritum hominis in eo: Ecce ego ponam Jerusalem superliminare crapulæ omnibus populis in circuitu: sed et Juda erit in obsidione contra Jerusalem. Et erit: in die illa ponam Jerusalem lapidem oneris cunctis populis: omnes qui levabunt eam concisione lacerabuntur, et colligentur adversus eam omnia regna terræ. In die illa, dicit Dominus, percutiam omnem equum in stuporem, et ascensorem ejus in amentiam: et super domum Juda aperiam oculos meos, et omnem equum populorum percutiam cæcitate. Et dicent duces Juda in corde suo: Confortentur mihi habitatores Jerusalem in Domino exercituum, Deo eorum! In die illa ponam duces Juda sicut caminum ignis in lignis, et sicut facem ignis in fœno: et devorabunt ad dexteram et ad sinistram omnes populos in circuitu, et habitabitur Jerusalem rursus in loco suo in Jerusalem. Et salvabit Dominus tabernacula Juda, sicut in principio, ut non magnifice glorietur domus David, et gloria habitantium Jerusalem contra Judam. |
8 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ὑπερασπιεῖ κύριος ὑπὲρ τῶν κατοικούντων Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἔσται ὁ ἀσθενῶν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὡς οἶκος Δαυιδ ὁ δὲ οἶκος Δαυιδ ὡς οἶκος θεοῦ ὡς ἄγγελος κυρίου ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν | 8 When that day comes, the men of Jerusalem shall have the Lord for their stay; the lowest fallen among them shall seem royal as David’s self, and David’s clansmen a race divine, as though an angel of the Lord marched at their head. | 8 In die illa proteget Dominus habitatores Jerusalem: et erit qui offenderit ex eis in die illa quasi David, et domus David quasi Dei, sicut angelus Domini in conspectu eorum. |
9 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ζητήσω τοῦ ἐξᾶραι πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τὰ ἐπερχόμενα ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ | 9 Never a nation that marched on Jerusalem but I will hunt it down, when that day comes, and make an end of it. | 9 Et erit in die illa: quæram conterere omnes gentes quæ veniunt contra Jerusalem. |
10 καὶ ἐκχεῶ ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον Δαυιδ καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ιερουσαλημ πνεῦμα χάριτος καὶ οἰκτιρμοῦ καὶ ἐπιβλέψονται πρός με ἀν{Q'} ὧν κατωρχήσαντο καὶ κόψονται ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν κοπετὸν ὡς ἐ{P'} ἀγαπητὸν καὶ ὀδυνηθήσονται ὀδύνην ὡς ἐπὶ πρωτοτόκῳ | 10 On David’s clan, on all the citizens of Jerusalem, I will pour out a gracious spirit of prayer; towards me they shall look, me whom they have pierced through.[3] Lament for him they must, and grieve bitterly; never was such lament for an only son, grief so bitter over first-born dead. | 10 Et effundam super domum David et super habitatores Jerusalem spiritum gratiæ et precum: et aspicient ad me quem confixerunt, et plangent eum planctu quasi super unigenitum, et dolebunt super eum, ut doleri solet in morte primogeniti. |
11 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ μεγαλυνθήσεται ὁ κοπετὸς ἐν Ιερουσαλημ ὡς κοπετὸς ῥοῶνος ἐν πεδίῳ ἐκκοπτομένου 12 καὶ κόψεται ἡ γῆ κατὰ φυλὰς φυλάς φυλὴ κα{Q'} ἑαυτὴν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν κα{Q'} ἑαυτάς φυλὴ οἶκου Δαυιδ κα{Q'} ἑαυτὴν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν κα{Q'} ἑαυτάς φυλὴ οἴκου Ναθαν κα{Q'} ἑαυτὴν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν κα{Q'} ἑαυτάς 13 φυλὴ οἴκου Λευι κα{Q'} ἑαυτὴν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν κα{Q'} ἑαυτάς φυλὴ τοῦ Συμεων κα{Q'} ἑαυτὴν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν κα{Q'} ἑαυτάς 14 πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ αἱ ὑπολελειμμέναι φυλὴ κα{Q'} ἑαυτὴν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν κα{Q'} ἑαυτάς | 11 When that day comes, great shall be the mourning in Jerusalem, great as Adadremmon’s mourning at Mageddo;[4] 12 the whole land in mourning, all its families apart. Here the men of David’s clan, yonder their women, 13 here the men of Nathan’s, yonder their women, here the men of Levi’s, yonder their women, here the men of Semei’s, yonder their women; 14 apart they shall mourn, whatever families there be, and all their women-folk apart. | 11 In die illa, magnus erit planctus in Jerusalem, sicut planctus Adadremmon in campo Mageddon. [1] Literally, ‘Behold, I will make Jerusalem a lintel of drunkenness to all peoples round about; ay, and Juda, too, shall be in the siege against Jerusalem’. In the Hebrew text, a cup is probably meant rather than a lintel; and the second half of the verse runs, ‘Ay, and against Juda, too, it shall be, in the siege (or, stronghold) against Jerusalem’.
[2] Instead of ‘first’, the Septuagint Greek and the Latin version give ‘as at first’, apparently by an error. Verses 8-14, with the whole of chapter 13, seem to form a collection of prophetic fragments rather than a continuous prophecy.
[3] A variant reading in some manuscripts gives ‘him’ instead of ‘me’. On critical grounds, it is less plausible, but it seems to have been current in very early times (see Jn. 19.37; also Apoc. 1.7).
[4] The reference may be to II Para. 35.25; but many battles were fought in the neighbourhood of Mageddo.
