3 Give Ammon this message from the Lord God: Joy, joy! was thy cry when my sanctuary was profaned, Israel ravaged, the men of Juda carried off into exile; 4 what shall be thy reward? The eastern folk shall enjoy thy lands; sheep-cote of theirs, tent of theirs shall be found in thee, crop of thine they shall eat, milk of thine drink; 5 camels lodged in Rabbath, and all Ammon a pasture-land of sheep! Thus you shall know what power is mine. 6 For clapping of hand and stamping of foot, and heart that rejoiced at Israel’s fall, 7 that power shall be used in vengeance; all the world shall have the pillaging of thee, till thou art a nation no longer, a kingdom no longer; thy ruin shall teach thee what manner of God I am. |
8 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν εἶπεν Μωαβ ἰδοὺ ὃν τρόπον πάντα τὰ ἔθνη οἶκος Ισραηλ καὶ Ιουδα 9 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ παραλύω τὸν ὦμον Μωαβ ἀπὸ πόλεων ἀκρωτηρίων αὐτοῦ ἐκλεκτὴν γῆν οἶκον Ασιμουθ ἐπάνω πηγῆς πόλεως παραθαλασσίας 10 τοῖς υἱοῖς Κεδεμ ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς Αμμων δέδωκα αὐτοὺς εἰς κληρονομίαν ὅπως μὴ μνεία γένηται τῶν υἱῶν Αμμων 11 καὶ εἰς Μωαβ ποιήσω ἐκδίκησιν καὶ ἐπιγνώσονται διότι ἐγὼ κύριος | 8 This doom, too, the Lord God pronounces: Boasted they, the Moabites and the men of Seir, that Juda had gone the way of other lands? 9 I will lay open the valleys of Moab, that climb up from the cities, those frontier cities, fair Bethjesimoth, and Beelmeon and Cariathaim; 10 open them to the men of the east in their pursuit of the Ammonites, and all shall be overrun. Ammon shall be blotted out from the memory of mankind,[1] 11 and there is justice, too, awaiting the Moabites; they too shall learn my power. |
12 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐποίησεν ἡ Ιδουμαία ἐν τῷ ἐκδικῆσαι αὐτοὺς ἐκδίκησιν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ιουδα καὶ ἐμνησικάκησαν καὶ ἐξεδίκησαν δίκην 13 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος καὶ ἐκτενῶ τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ τὴν Ιδουμαίαν καὶ ἐξολεθρεύσω ἐξ αὐτῆς ἄνθρωπον καὶ κτῆνος καὶ θήσομαι αὐτὴν ἔρημον καὶ ἐκ Θαιμαν διωκόμενοι ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ πεσοῦνται 14 καὶ δώσω ἐκδίκησίν μου ἐπὶ τὴν Ιδουμαίαν ἐν χειρὶ λαοῦ μου Ισραηλ καὶ ποιήσουσιν ἐν τῇ Ιδουμαίᾳ κατὰ τὴν ὀργήν μου καὶ κατὰ τὸν θυμόν μου καὶ ἐπιγνώσονται τὴν ἐκδίκησίν μου λέγει κύριος | 12 And this: Ill did the Edomites to glut their malice, by taking their revenge on Juda. 13 This doom the Lord God pronounces: My hand is raised to smite Edom, sparing neither man nor beast, making a desert of it all the way from Teman in the south to Dedan, that shall be put to the sword. 14 My own people of Israel shall execute this sentence against Edom, avenge for me the grudge I bear it; then it shall be seen how I punish my enemies, the Lord God says. |
15 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐποίησαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐν ἐκδικήσει καὶ ἐξανέστησαν ἐκδίκησιν ἐπιχαίροντες ἐκ ψυχῆς τοῦ ἐξαλεῖψαι ἕως αἰῶνος 16 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐκτενῶ τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους καὶ ἐξολεθρεύσω Κρῆτας καὶ ἀπολῶ τοὺς καταλοίπους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν παραλίαν 17 καὶ ποιήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐκδικήσεις μεγάλας καὶ ἐπιγνώσονται διότι ἐγὼ κύριος ἐν τῷ δοῦναι τὴν ἐκδίκησίν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτούς | 15 And this: Rancour of the Philistines, that murderous toll would take, old scores would settle! 16 Against the Philistines, too, this hand is raised; executed they shall be, the executioners;[2] the dwellers on the sea-coast, all that is left of them, I mean to exterminate. 17 Great havoc I mean to make of them, unrelenting in my anger; such havoc as shall teach them to know what the Lord is. | 15 Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Pro eo quod fecerunt Palæstini vindictam, et ulti se sunt toto animo, interficientes, et implentes inimicitias veteres, propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Ecce ego extendam manum meam super Palæstinos, et interficiam interfectores, et perdam reliquias maritimæ regionis, faciamque in eis ultiones magnas, arguens in furore: et scient quia ego Dominus, cum dedero vindictam meam super eos. |
[1] vv. 9, 10. Literally, ‘Behold, I will open up the shoulder of Moab from the cities; from his cities, I say, and from his frontiers; (I will open up) those famous (cities) of the earth, Bethjesimoth, Beelmeon and Cariathaim, to the sons of the east with the sons of Ammon’, etc. It seems probable that the whole prophecy against Moab has come down to us in a faulty text; the mention of Seir (Edom) in verse 8 comes too early, the mention of Ammon in verse 10 too late.
[2] ‘The executioners’; that is, the Cerethites, a Philistine clan, ‘cutters-down’ both by the derivation of their name, and by the office they enjoyed under the early kings of Israel (II Kg. 8.18, III Kg. 2.25, 29).
