1 ὁ λόγος ὁ γενόμενος παρὰ κυρίου πρὸς Ιερεμιαν λέγων 2 ἀκούσατε τοὺς λόγους τῆς διαθήκης ταύτης καὶ λαλήσεις πρὸς ἄνδρας Ιουδα καὶ πρὸς τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ιερουσαλημ 3 καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ ἐπικατάρατος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὃς οὐκ ἀκούσεται τῶν λόγων τῆς διαθήκης ταύτης 4 ἧς ἐνετειλάμην τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ ἀνήγαγον αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ἐκ καμίνου τῆς σιδηρᾶς λέγων ἀκούσατε τῆς φωνῆς μου καὶ ποιήσατε πάντα ὅσα ἐὰν ἐντείλωμαι ὑμῖν καὶ ἔσεσθέ μοι εἰς λαόν καὶ ἐγὼ ἔσομαι ὑμῖν εἰς θεόν 5 ὅπως στήσω τὸν ὅρκον μου ὃν ὤμοσα τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν τοῦ δοῦναι αὐτοῖς γῆν ῥέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι καθὼς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη καὶ ἀπεκρίθην καὶ εἶπα γένοιτο κύριε 6 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με ἀνάγνωθι τοὺς λόγους τούτους ἐν πόλεσιν Ιουδα καὶ ἔξωθεν Ιερουσαλημ λέγων ἀκούσατε τοὺς λόγους τῆς διαθήκης ταύτης καὶ ποιήσατε αὐτούς 7 8 καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησαν 1 Here is a message which came from the Lord to Jeremias 2 about the covenant: Listen well to the terms of it, and be the spokesmen of it to all the race of Juda, all the citizens of Jerusalem.[1] 3 This warning thou shalt give them from the Lord God of Israel: Cursed be the man who will not obey the terms of this covenant, 4 the commandment which I enjoined on your fathers when I rescued them from Egypt’s furnace of iron. Give heed to my call, I told them, and do as I bid you; then you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 5 So would I fulfil the promise made on oath to their fathers before them; the promise of a land all milk and honey, that land which is yours to-day.

So be it, Lord, said I; 6 and he bade me cry the message aloud all through the townships of Juda, all through the streets of Jerusalem: Listen to the terms of this covenant, and keep them well; 7 ever since I rescued them from Egypt I have been adjuring those fathers of yours, day in, day out, to listen to me, 8 and listen they would not. No hearing would they give me, but went each his own way, perverse as ever, till at last I must carry out the threats contained in this covenant, still proclaimed and still defied.

Audite verba pacti hujus,
et loquimini ad viros Juda,
et ad habitatores Jerusalem,
3
et eritis mihi in populum,
et ego ero vobis in Deum:
5
ut suscitem juramentum quod juravi patribus vestris,
daturum me eis terram fluentem lacte et melle,
sicut est dies hæc.

Et respondi, et dixi: Amen, Domine.
6 Et dixit Dominus ad me:

Vociferare omnia verba hæc in civitatibus Juda,
et foris Jerusalem, dicens:
Audite verba pacti hujus, et facite illa,
7
quia contestans contestatus sum patres vestros,
mane consurgens contestatus sum,
et dixi: Audite vocem meam.
8
Et non audierunt, nec inclinaverunt aurem suam,
sed abierunt, unusquisque in pravitate cordis sui mali:
et induxi super eos omnia verba pacti hujus
quod præcepi ut facerent,
et non fecerunt.
10 They have gone back to the old guilty ways of their rebellious fathers; they in their turn have betaken themselves to the worship of alien gods; my immemorial covenant with Israel and Juda is void; they have rescinded it! 11 And now, the Lord says, I mean to visit them with punishment inevitable, punishment inexorable; 12 let Juda and Jerusalem have recourse, if they will, to the gods they honour with their sacrifices, it will avail them nothing in their distress. 13 No township of thine, Juda, but must have its own deity, no street in Jerusalem but thou wouldst set up there altars abominable, where sacrifice is offered to the gods of the country-side! 9 Et dixit Dominus ad me:

Inventa est conjuratio in viris Juda et in habitatoribus Jerusalem.
10
11
Quam ob rem hæc dicit Dominus:
Ecce ego inducam super eos mala
13
Secundum numerum enim civitatum tuarum
erant dii tui, Juda:
et secundum numerum viarum Jerusalem,
posuisti aras confusionis,
aras ad libandum Baalim.
14 καὶ σὺ μὴ προσεύχου περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου καὶ μὴ ἀξίου περὶ αὐτῶν ἐν δεήσει καὶ προσευχῇ ὅτι οὐκ εἰσακούσομαι ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐν ᾧ ἐπικαλοῦνταί με ἐν καιρῷ κακώσεως αὐτῶν 15 τί ἡ ἠγαπημένη ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ μου ἐποίησεν βδέλυγμα μὴ εὐχαὶ καὶ κρέα ἅγια ἀφελοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ τὰς κακίας σου ἢ τούτοις διαφεύξῃ 16 ἐλαίαν ὡραίαν εὔσκιον τῷ εἴδει ἐκάλεσεν κύριος τὸ ὄνομά σου εἰς φωνὴν περιτομῆς αὐτῆς ἀνήφθη πῦρ ἐ{P'} αὐτήν μεγάλη ἡ θλῖψις ἐπὶ σέ ἠχρεώθησαν οἱ κλάδοι αὐτῆς 17 καὶ κύριος ὁ καταφυτεύσας σε ἐλάλησεν ἐπὶ σὲ κακὰ ἀντὶ τῆς κακίας οἴκου Ισραηλ καὶ οἴκου Ιουδα ὅτι ἐποίησαν ἑαυτοῖς τοῦ παροργίσαι με ἐν τῷ θυμιᾶν αὐτοὺς τῇ Βααλ 14 Nor do thou, Jeremias, think to intercede for this people of mine, or take up in their name the burden of praise and prayer; when they cry to me in their distress, hearing they shall have none. 15 A people so well beloved, that so haunts my house, yet stained with crime! What, dost thou think the consecrated flesh will avail to rid thee of thy wanton guilt?[2] 16 An olive-tree, sturdy and fair and fruitful, so it was the Lord loved to think of thee; and now, at the sound of his majestic voice,[3] fire breaks out in it, and all those shoots are burned away. 17 Yes, it is the Lord of hosts, who once planted thee, that has now decreed the undoing of Israel and Juda, undoing for their own ill-doing, when they sacrificed to the gods of the country-side in defiance of me. 14
quia non exaudiam in tempore clamoris eorum ad me,
in tempore afflictionis eorum.
15
numquid carnes sanctæ auferent a te malitias tuas,
in quibus gloriata es?
16
Olivam uberem, pulchram, fructiferam, speciosam,
vocavit Dominus nomen tuum:
ad vocem loquelæ, grandis exarsit ignis in ea,
et combusta sunt fruteta ejus.
17
Et Dominus exercituum, qui plantavit te,
locutus est super te malum,
pro malis domus Israël, et domus Juda,
quæ fecerunt sibi ad irritandum me,
libantes Baalim.
19 Hitherto, I had been unsuspecting as a cade lamb that is led off to the slaughter-house; I knew nothing of the plots they were hatching against me, as they whispered, Let us give him a taste of the gallows-tree;[4] let us rid the world of him, so that his very name will be forgotten! 20 But thou, Lord of hosts, true judge that canst read the inmost thoughts of man’s heart, let me live to see thee punish them; to thee I have made my plea known. 21 And now the Lord has a word for yonder men of Anathoth, who conspired to kill me, and would have stopped me prophesying in the Lord’s name, on pain of my life. 22 I will call them to account for it, says the Lord of hosts; by the sword their warriors shall perish, and their sons and daughters by famine. 23 None shall be left; woe betide the men of Anathoth, when the year comes for my reckoning with them. 18

Tu autem, Domine, demonstrasti mihi, et cognovi:
tunc ostendisti mihi studia eorum.
19
Et ego quasi agnus mansuetus,
qui portatur ad victimam:
et non cognovi quia cogitaverunt super me consilia, dicentes:
Mittamus lignum in panem ejus,
et eradamus eum de terra viventium,
et nomen ejus non memoretur amplius.
20
Tu autem, Domine Sabaoth, qui judicas juste,
et probas renes et corda,
videam ultionem tuam ex eis:
tibi enim revelavi causam meam.
21
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus ad viros Anathoth,
qui quærunt animam tuam, et dicunt:
Non prophetabis in nomine Domini,
et non morieris in manibus nostris:
22
propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Ecce ego visitabo super eos:
juvenes morientur in gladio;
filii eorum et filiæ eorum morientur in fame.
23
Et reliquiæ non erunt ex eis:
inducam enim malum super viros Anathoth,
annum visitationis eorum.
