1 τάδε λέγει κύριος πορεύου καὶ κατάβηθι εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ βασιλέως Ιουδα καὶ λαλήσεις ἐκεῖ τὸν λόγον τοῦτον 2 καὶ ἐρεῖς ἄκουε λόγον κυρίου βασιλεῦ Ιουδα ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ θρόνου Δαυιδ σὺ καὶ ὁ οἶκός σου καὶ ὁ λαός σου καὶ οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι ταῖς πύλαις ταύταις 3 τάδε λέγει κύριος ποιεῖτε κρίσιν καὶ δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἐξαιρεῖσθε διηρπασμένον ἐκ χειρὸς ἀδικοῦντος αὐτὸν καὶ προσήλυτον καὶ ὀρφανὸν καὶ χήραν μὴ καταδυναστεύετε καὶ μὴ ἀσεβεῖτε καὶ αἷμα ἀθῷον μὴ ἐκχέητε ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ 4 διότι ἐὰν ποιοῦντες ποιήσητε τὸν λόγον τοῦτον καὶ εἰσελεύσονται ἐν ταῖς πύλαις τοῦ οἴκου τούτου βασιλεῖς καθήμενοι ἐπὶ θρόνου Δαυιδ καὶ ἐπιβεβηκότες ἐ{F'} ἁρμάτων καὶ ἵππων αὐτοὶ καὶ οἱ παῖδες αὐτῶν καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτῶν 5 ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ποιήσητε τοὺς λόγους τούτους κα{T'} ἐμαυτοῦ ὤμοσα λέγει κύριος ὅτι εἰς ἐρήμωσιν ἔσται ὁ οἶκος οὗτος 6 ὅτι τάδε λέγει κύριος κατὰ τοῦ οἴκου βασιλέως Ιουδα Γαλααδ σύ μοι ἀρχὴ τοῦ Λιβάνου ἐὰν μὴ θῶ σε εἰς ἔρημον πόλεις μὴ κατοικηθησομένας 7 καὶ ἐπάξω ἐπὶ σὲ ἄνδρα ὀλεθρεύοντα καὶ τὸν πέλεκυν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκκόψουσιν τὰς ἐκλεκτὰς κέδρους σου καὶ ἐμβαλοῦσιν εἰς τὸ πῦρ 1 A message from the Lord, I must betake myself to the royal palace, and make proclamation there; 2 Listen to a divine warning, king of Juda though thou be, and heir to David’s throne; it is for thee and thy courtiers and thy retinue, all that claim entry here. 3 Just sentence, the Lord says, and right award; rob the oppressor of his prey; to alien, orphan and widow do neither despite nor wrong; never, within these walls, be innocence condemned to death. 4 This warning if you obey, through these palace gates the heirs of David and of David’s throne, with horses and chariots, courtiers and retinue, shall yet pass to and fro. 5 Disobey, the Lord says, and my own honour is engaged to make, of this palace, a ruin. 6 On the royal house of Juda this is the Lord’s sentence: Growth I found here once, generous as in Galaad or on Lebanon’s height; now I have sworn to make a desert of it, no place for the haunts of men.[1] 7 Who shall strike the blow, and with what arms, is decreed already; all those fair cedars shall be cut down, and cast into the fire.

Audi verbum Domini, rex Juda,
qui sedes super solium David:
tu et servi tui, et populus tuus,
qui ingredimini per portas istas.
3
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Facite judicium et justitiam,
et liberate vi oppressum de manu calumniatoris:
et advenam, et pupillum, et viduam
nolite contristare, neque opprimatis inique,
et sanguinem innocentem ne effundatis in loco isto.
4
Si enim facientes feceritis verbum istud,
ingredientur per portas domus hujus
reges sedentes de genere David super thronum ejus,
et ascendentes currus et equos,
ipsi, et servi, et populus eorum.
5
Quod si non audieritis verba hæc:
in memetipso juravi, dicit Dominus,
quia in solitudinem erit domus hæc.
6
Quia hæc dicit Dominus super domum regis Juda:
Galaad, tu mihi caput Libani,
si non posuero te solitudinem, urbes inhabitabiles!
7
Et sanctificabo super te, interficientem virum et arma ejus:
et succident electas cedros tuas,
et præcipitabunt in ignem.
8 καὶ διελεύσονται ἔθνη διὰ τῆς πόλεως ταύτης καὶ ἐροῦσιν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ διὰ τί ἐποίησεν κύριος οὕτως τῇ πόλει τῇ μεγάλῃ ταύτῃ 9 καὶ ἐροῦσιν ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐγκατέλιπον τὴν διαθήκην κυρίου θεοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ προσεκύνησαν θεοῖς ἀλλοτρίοις καὶ ἐδούλευσαν αὐτοῖς 8 Nations a many shall pass by those ruins; and when a man asks his neighbour what it meant, that the Lord should deal so hardly with a great city like this, 9 the answer will be, It was because they forsook the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped alien gods, took alien gods for their masters. 8
Et pertransibunt gentes multæ per civitatem hanc,
et dicet unusquisque proximo suo:
Quare fecit Dominus sic civitati huic grandi?
9
Et respondebunt:
Eo quod dereliquerint pactum Domini Dei sui,
et adoraverint deos alienos, et servierint eis.
10 μὴ κλαίετε τὸν τεθνηκότα μηδὲ θρηνεῖτε αὐτόν κλαύσατε κλαυθμῷ τὸν ἐκπορευόμενον ὅτι οὐκ ἐπιστρέψει ἔτι καὶ οὐ μὴ ἴδῃ τὴν γῆν πατρίδος αὐτοῦ 11 διότι τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπὶ Σελλημ υἱὸν Ιωσια τὸν βασιλεύοντα ἀντὶ Ιωσια τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ὃς ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τοῦ τόπου τούτου οὐκ ἀναστρέψει ἐκεῖ οὐκέτι 12 ἀλ{L'} ἢ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ οὗ μετῴκισα αὐτόν ἐκεῖ ἀποθανεῖται καὶ τὴν γῆν ταύτην οὐκ ὄψεται ἔτι 10 Not for the dead your tears, not for him bow your heads; if weep you must, weep for him that must go and come again no more, never again see the land of his birth! 11 Sellum,[2] that followed his father Josias on the throne of Juda, is leaving Jerusalem, the Lord says, and will never come back to it; 12 die he must in that country to which I have banished him, and see this land no more. 10
Nolite flere mortuum,
neque lugeatis super eum fletu:
plangite eum qui egreditur,
quia non revertetur ultra,
nec videbit terram nativitatis suæ.
11
Quia hæc dicit Dominus ad Sellum,
filium Josiæ, regem Juda,
qui regnavit pro Josia patre suo,
qui egressus est de loco isto:
Non revertetur huc amplius,
12
Alas for the man that sets his fellow-man vainly drudging, and leaves his wages unpaid! 14 A fine house I will make of it, says he, and wide rooms in it! Here he will throw out a window, there he will panel a wall with cedar, and paint it vermilion. 15 Art thou hoping for a long reign, that thou shouldst challenge comparison with the cedar?[3] Thy father was one that ate and drank at his ease, gave every man his just due, and was content; 16 well for him that he gave the friendless and the poor redress, as men will when they bethink themselves of me. 17 Thou hast no eyes, no thoughts, but for gain; for innocent men’s undoing, for oppression, for the reckless pursuit of mischief. 18 This, then, is the Lord’s sentence upon Joachim, son to Josias and king of Juda: For him no cry shall be made, Brother, what grief! Sister of mine, what grief![4] For him no cry shall be made, Ah, what a master! Ah, what renown! 19 An ass’s burial he shall have, cast out, a stinking corpse, beyond the gates of Jerusalem. 13
Væ qui ædificat domum suam in injustitia,
et cœnacula sua non in judicio:
amicum suum opprimet frustra,
et mercedem ejus non reddet ei:
14
16
Judicavit causam pauperis et egeni in bonum suum:
numquid non ideo quia cognovit me? dicit Dominus.
17
19
Sepultura asini sepelietur,
putrefactus et projectus extra portas Jerusalem.
20 ἀνάβηθι εἰς τὸν Λίβανον καὶ κέκραξον καὶ εἰς τὴν Βασαν δὸς τὴν φωνήν σου καὶ βόησον εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης ὅτι συνετρίβησαν πάντες οἱ ἐρασταί σου 21 ἐλάλησα πρὸς σὲ ἐν τῇ παραπτώσει σου καὶ εἶπας οὐκ ἀκούσομαι αὕτη ἡ ὁδός σου ἐκ νεότητός σου οὐκ ἤκουσας τῆς φωνῆς μου 22 πάντας τοὺς ποιμένας σου ποιμανεῖ ἄνεμος καὶ οἱ ἐρασταί σου ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ ἐξελεύσονται ὅτι τότε αἰσχυνθήσῃ καὶ ἀτιμωθήσῃ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν φιλούντων σε 23 κατοικοῦσα ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ ἐννοσσεύουσα ἐν ταῖς κέδροις καταστενάξεις ἐν τῷ ἐλθεῖν σοι ὠδῖνας ὡς τικτούσης 20 Get thee gone, faithless people, to Lebanon, and cry out there; fill Basan with thy voice, and let Abarim[5] echo the cry again; ruin has overtaken all those lovers of thine. 21 In the days of thy ease, I gave thee warning, but thou wouldst not listen; it was ever thus from thy girlhood’s days, my voice went unheard. 22 Drifting with the wind, the drovers thou once didst follow, captive all those that once held thy love! Be ashamed at last, and blush for all thy wickedness. 23 High on Lebanon thy dwelling-place, high in the cedars that nest of thine, piteous shall be thy moan when pangs overtake thee, like the pangs of a woman in travail. 20

Ascende Libanum, et clama,
et in Basan da vocem tuam:
et clama ad transeuntes,
quia contriti sunt omnes amatores tui.
21
Locutus sum ad te in abundantia tua,
et dixisti: Non audiam:
hæc est via tua ab adolescentia tua,
quia non audisti vocem meam.
22
Omnes pastores tuos pascet ventus,
et amatores tui in captivitatem ibunt:
et tunc confunderis,
et erubesces ab omni malitia tua.
23
Quæ sedes in Libano,
et nidificas in cedris,
quomodo congemuisti cum venissent tibi dolores,
quasi dolores parturientis?
24 ζῶ ἐγώ λέγει κύριος ἐὰν γενόμενος γένηται Ιεχονιας υἱὸς Ιωακιμ βασιλεὺς Ιουδα ἀποσφράγισμα ἐπὶ τῆς χειρὸς τῆς δεξιᾶς μου ἐκεῖθεν ἐκσπάσω σε 25 καὶ παραδώσω σε εἰς χεῖρας τῶν ζητούντων τὴν ψυχήν σου ὧν σὺ εὐλαβῇ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν εἰς χεῖρας τῶν Χαλδαίων 26 καὶ ἀπορρίψω σὲ καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου τὴν τεκοῦσάν σε εἰς γῆν οὗ οὐκ ἐτέχθης ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐκεῖ ἀποθανεῖσθε 27 εἰς δὲ τὴν γῆν ἣν αὐτοὶ εὔχονται ταῖς ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν οὐ μὴ ἀποστρέψωσιν 28 ἠτιμώθη Ιεχονιας ὡς σκεῦος οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν χρεία αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐξερρίφη καὶ ἐξεβλήθη εἰς γῆν ἣν οὐκ ᾔδει 29 γῆ γῆ ἄκουε λόγον κυρίου 30 γράψον τὸν ἄνδρα τοῦτον ἐκκήρυκτον ἄνθρωπον ὅτι οὐ μὴ αὐξηθῇ ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτοῦ ἀνὴρ καθήμενος ἐπὶ θρόνου Δαυιδ ἄρχων ἔτι ἐν τῷ Ιουδα 24 And of Joachim’s son Jechonias, that is heir to the throne of Juda, the Lord says this: Were he the signet ring on my right hand, I would cast him off none the less. 25 Thou hast sworn enemies to fear; Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and his Chaldaeans, shall have the mastery of thee. 26 Cast away, thyself and the queen-mother who bore thee, into an alien land, far from the land of your birth, to die there; 27 ever longing for home, and home returning never. 28 What, is he but a broken piece of earthenware, this Jechonias, a useless shard, that he should be thrown away, and his sons with him, cast out into a land unknown? 29 Alas, my country, alas, alas, my country, bitter hearing the Lord sends thee: 30 Write him down a barren trunk, a life gone to waste; child of his race shall never mount David’s throne, or govern this realm of Juda. 24
Vivo ego, dicit Dominus,
quia si fuerit Jechonias filius Joakim regis Juda
annulus in manu dextera mea,
inde evellam eum,
25
et dabo te in manu quærentium animam tuam,
et in manu quorum tu formidas faciem,
et in manu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis,
et in manu Chaldæorum:
26
et mittam te, et matrem tuam quæ genuit te,
in terram alienam, in qua nati non estis,
ibique moriemini.
27
28
Numquid vas fictile atque contritum
vir iste Jechonias?
numquid vas absque omni voluptate?
quare abjecti sunt ipse et semen ejus,
et projecti in terram quam ignoraverunt?
29
Terra, terra, terra, audi sermonem Domini.
30
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Scribe virum istum sterilem,
virum qui in diebus suis non prosperabitur:
nec enim erit de semine ejus vir
qui sedeat super solium David,
et potestatem habeat ultra in Juda.
