1 εἶδον τὸν κύριον ἐφεστῶτα ἐπὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ εἶπεν πάταξον ἐπὶ τὸ ἱλαστήριον καὶ σεισθήσεται τὰ πρόπυλα καὶ διάκοψον εἰς κεφαλὰς πάντων καὶ τοὺς καταλοίπους αὐτῶν ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ ἀποκτενῶ οὐ μὴ διαφύγῃ ἐξ αὐτῶν φεύγων καὶ οὐ μὴ διασωθῇ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀνασῳζόμενος 2 ἐὰν κατορυγῶσιν εἰς ᾅδου ἐκεῖθεν ἡ χείρ μου ἀνασπάσει αὐτούς καὶ ἐὰν ἀναβῶσιν εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν ἐκεῖθεν κατάξω αὐτούς 3 ἐὰν ἐγκρυβῶσιν εἰς τὴν κορυφὴν τοῦ Καρμήλου ἐκεῖθεν ἐξερευνήσω καὶ λήμψομαι αὐτούς καὶ ἐὰν καταδύσωσιν ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν μου εἰς τὰ βάθη τῆς θαλάσσης ἐκεῖ ἐντελοῦμαι τῷ δράκοντι καὶ δήξεται αὐτούς 4 καὶ ἐὰν πορευθῶσιν ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ πρὸ προσώπου τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν ἐκεῖ ἐντελοῦμαι τῇ ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἀποκτενεῖ αὐτούς καὶ στηριῶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς εἰς κακὰ καὶ οὐκ εἰς ἀγαθά 5 καὶ κύριος κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ὁ ἐφαπτόμενος τῆς γῆς καὶ σαλεύων αὐτήν καὶ πενθήσουσιν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες αὐτήν καὶ ἀναβήσεται ὡς ποταμὸς συντέλεια αὐτῆς καὶ καταβήσεται ὡς ποταμὸς Αἰγύπτου 6 ὁ οἰκοδομῶν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνάβασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς θεμελιῶν ὁ προσκαλούμενος τὸ ὕδωρ τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἐκχέων αὐτὸ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ὄνομα αὐτῷ | 1 And now I saw the Lord standing above the altar; Smite column there, he cried, lintel there dislodge, nest of ill-gotten gains![1] To the last man, the sword must take its toll; refuge shall be none. Flee they, never a fugitive shall escape; 2 from the pit beneath I will dig them up, from heaven above I will drag them down; 3 hide they on Carmel’s heights, I will search and seize them, lurk they in the sea’s depths, my writ runs there; maw of monster shall devour them. 4 Let enemy drive them into exile, even there the sword shall be my pursuivant; watch and ward I keep over them, never doubt it, but to their undoing. … 5 The Lord God of hosts, whose touch melts earth, to the hurt of all that dwell in it, makes it everywhere mount up and sink, like Egypt’s river in flood; 6 his the arched stairway of heaven, his the knitted frame of earth; beckons he to the waters of the sea, and over the earth spreads them, such the power of his name! |

Fugient, et non salvabitur ex eis qui fugerit. Si descenderint usque ad infernum, inde manus mea educet eos; et si ascenderint usque in cælum, inde detraham eos. Et si absconditi fuerint in vertice Carmeli, inde scrutans auferam eos; et si celaverint se ab oculis meis in profundo maris, ibi mandabo serpenti, et mordebit eos. Et si abierint in captivitatem coram inimicis suis, ibi mandabo gladio, et occidet eos: et ponam oculos meos super eos in malum, et non in bonum. Et Dominus Deus exercituum, qui tangit terram, et tabescet, et lugebunt omnes habitantes in ea: et ascendet sicut rivus omnis, et defluet sicut fluvius Ægypti. 7 οὐχ ὡς υἱοὶ Αἰθιόπων ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐμοί υἱοὶ Ισραηλ λέγει κύριος οὐ τὸν Ισραηλ ἀνήγαγον ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἐκ Καππαδοκίας καὶ τοὺς Σύρους ἐκ βόθρου 8 ἰδοὺ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ ἐξαρῶ αὐτὴν ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς πλὴν ὅτι οὐκ εἰς τέλος ἐξαρῶ τὸν οἶκον Ιακωβ λέγει κύριος 9 διότι ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐντέλλομαι καὶ λικμιῶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ ὃν τρόπον λικμᾶται ἐν τῷ λικμῷ καὶ οὐ μὴ πέσῃ σύντριμμα ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν 10 ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ τελευτήσουσι πάντες ἁμαρτωλοὶ λαοῦ μου οἱ λέγοντες οὐ μὴ ἐγγίσῃ οὐ{D'} οὐ μὴ γένηται ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς τὰ κακά 11 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀναστήσω τὴν σκηνὴν Δαυιδ τὴν πεπτωκυῖαν καὶ ἀνοικοδομήσω τὰ πεπτωκότα αὐτῆς καὶ τὰ κατεσκαμμένα αὐτῆς ἀναστήσω καὶ ἀνοικοδομήσω αὐτὴν καθὼς αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ αἰῶνος 12 ὅπως ἐκζητήσωσιν οἱ κατάλοιποι τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐ{F'} οὓς ἐπικέκληται τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐ{P'} αὐτούς λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ ποιῶν ταῦτα 13 ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται λέγει κύριος καὶ καταλήμψεται ὁ ἀλοητὸς τὸν τρύγητον καὶ περκάσει ἡ σταφυλὴ ἐν τῷ σπόρῳ καὶ ἀποσταλάξει τὰ ὄρη γλυκασμόν καὶ πάντες οἱ βουνοὶ σύμφυτοι ἔσονται 14 καὶ ἐπιστρέψω τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν λαοῦ μου Ισραηλ καὶ οἰκοδομήσουσιν πόλεις τὰς ἠφανισμένας καὶ κατοικήσουσιν καὶ καταφυτεύσουσιν ἀμπελῶνας καὶ πίονται τὸν οἶνον αὐτῶν καὶ φυτεύσουσιν κήπους καὶ φάγονται τὸν καρπὸν αὐτῶν 15 καὶ καταφυτεύσω αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκσπασθῶσιν οὐκέτι ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν ἧς ἔδωκα αὐτοῖς λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ | 7 Ethiop or Israelite, what care I? the Lord says. God that brought you here from Egypt was God that brought the Philistines from Caphtor, brought the Syrians from Cir![2] 8 Divine regard that watches ever this kingdom, marks ever its guilt; I will blot it out, believe me, from the face of the earth. And blot out the name of Jacob altogether? Nay, not that, the Lord says. 9 At my command, the whole world shall be a sieve, to sift the race of Israel as corn is sifted in the riddle, and never a grain[3] cast out loose on the bare ground; 10 at the sword’s point they shall die, all the guilty that are found among my people; the guilty, who now flatter themselves that evil shall never come next or nigh them. 11 Then, I mean to rebuild the fallen dwelling-place of David, all its breaches made good, all its ruins restored; it shall stand once more as it stood long ago; 12 empire it shall have over the Edomites, and all the Gentile folk I claim for my own. 13 A time is coming, the Lord says, when ploughman shall tread on the heels of reaper, sower’s task begin ere vintager’s is ended; never a mountain-side but shall run with sweet wine, never a hill but its rugged nature shall be tamed.[4] 14 I will bring back my people of Israel from its exile, to rebuild ruined cities and dwell there, plant vineyards and drink of them, till gardens and eat the fruits of them. 15 Firm root they shall take in their native soil, never again to be torn away from the home I have given them, says the Lord, thy own God. |
7 Numquid non ut filii Æthiopum vos estis mihi, filii Israël? ait Dominus. Numquid non Israël ascendere feci de terra Ægypti, et Palæstinos de Cappadocia, et Syros de Cyrene? Ecce oculi Domini Dei super regnum peccans: et conteram illud a facie terræ; verumtamen conterens non conteram domum Jacob, dicit Dominus. Ecce enim mandabo ego, et concutiam in omnibus gentibus domum Israël, sicut concutitur triticum in cribro, et non cadet lapillus super terram. In gladio morientur omnes peccatores populi mei, qui dicunt: Non appropinquabit, et non veniet super nos malum. In die illa suscitabo tabernaculum David, quod cecidit: et reædificabo aperturas murorum ejus, et ea quæ corruerant instaurabo: et reædificabo illud sicut in diebus antiquis, ut possideant reliquias Idumææ, et omnes nationes: eo quod invocatum sit nomen meum super eos, dicit Dominus faciens hæc. Ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et comprehendet arator messorem, et calcator uvæ mittentem semen: et stillabunt montes dulcedinem, et omnes colli culti erunt. Et convertam captivitatem populi mei Israël; et ædificabunt civitates desertas, et inhabitabunt; et plantabunt vineas, et bibent vinum earum, et facient hortos, et comedent fructus eorum. Et plantabo eos super humum suam, et non evellam eos ultra de terra sua, quam dedi eis, dicit Dominus Deus tuus. |
[1] ‘Nest of ill-gotten gains’; the meaning of this phrase is very doubtful.
[2] The Latin version here gives Cappadocia for Caphtor, and Cyrene for Cir, as elsewhere. The identification is by no means probable.
[3] ‘Never a grain’; the word used is of doubtful significance. But the meaning seems to be that all the Israelites will go into captivity, and this will be a sieve to separate the good from the worthless among them; none will escape, as a grain of corn might escape by being thrown carelessly over the sieve’s edge.
[4] ‘Its rugged nature shall be tamed’; literally, in the Latin version, ‘it shall be cultivated’; in the Hebrew text, ‘it shall melt’.
