Knox Bible Ad

1 μὴ ποίει κακά καὶ οὐ μή σε καταλάβῃ κακόν 2 ἀπόστηθι ἀπὸ ἀδίκου καὶ ἐκκλινεῖ ἀπὸ σοῦ 3 υἱέ μὴ σπεῖρε ἐ{P'} αὔλακας ἀδικίας καὶ οὐ μὴ θερίσῃς αὐτὰ ἑπταπλασίως 1 Harm if thou do none, harm shall none befall thee; 2 clear of wrong is clear of mishap. 3 What avails it, my son, to sow in the furrow of mischief, and reap a sevenfold harvest? 1

Noli facere mala, et non te apprehendent:
2
3
Fili, non semines mala in sulcis injustitiæ,
et non metes ea in septuplum.
4 μὴ ζήτει παρὰ κυρίου ἡγεμονίαν μηδὲ παρὰ βασιλέως καθέδραν δόξης 4 Never ask of God high station, or of the king preferment. 4
Noli quærere a Domino ducatum,
neque a rege cathedram honoris.
5 μὴ δικαιοῦ ἔναντι κυρίου καὶ παρὰ βασιλεῖ μὴ σοφίζου 5 Never try to prove thy innocence before God, who knows all, nor thy subtlety before the king. 5
Non te justifices ante Deum,
quoniam agnitor cordis ipse est:
et penes regem noli velle videri sapiens.
6 μὴ ζήτει γενέσθαι κριτής μὴ οὐκ ἰσχύσεις ἐξᾶραι ἀδικίας μήποτε εὐλαβηθῇς ἀπὸ προσώπου δυνάστου καὶ θήσεις σκάνδαλον ἐν εὐθύτητί σου 6 Do not sit in judgement, unless thou art able to crush the wrong; if thou favour the rich, what else is thy award but a snare for thy own virtue? 6
Noli quærere fieri judex,
nisi valeas virtute irrumpere iniquitates:
ne forte extimescas faciem potentis,
et ponas scandalum in æquitate tua.
7 μὴ ἁμάρτανε εἰς πλῆθος πόλεως καὶ μὴ καταβάλῃς σεαυτὸν ἐν ὄχλῳ 7 Hurt never the public weal; no need to embroil thyself with thy own neighbours. 7
Non pecces in multitudinem civitatis,
nec te immittas in populum:
8 μὴ καταδεσμεύσῃς δὶς ἁμαρτίαν ἐν γὰρ τῇ μιᾷ οὐκ ἀθῷος ἔσῃ 8 Never tack sin to sin; for the first thou art in arrears. 8
neque alliges duplicia peccata,
nec enim in uno eris immunis.
9 μὴ ὀλιγοψυχήσῃς ἐν τῇ προσευχῇ σου 10 καὶ ἐλεημοσύνην ποιῆσαι μὴ παρίδῃς 9 Do not lose confidence 10 in thy praying, or leave almsgiving undone. 9
Noli esse pusillanimis in animo tuo:
10
exorare et facere eleemosynam ne despicias.
11 μὴ εἴπῃς τῷ πλήθει τῶν δώρων μου ἐπόψεται καὶ ἐν τῷ προσενέγκαι με θεῷ ὑψίστῳ προσδέξεται 11 Do not flatter thyself that God will look favourably on thy many offerings, as if he, the most High, could not refuse thy gifts. 11
Ne dicas: In multitudine munerum meorum respiciet Deus,
et offerente me Deo altissimo, munera mea suscipiet.
12 μὴ καταγέλα ἄνθρωπον ὄντα ἐν πικρίᾳ ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ ἔστιν γὰρ ὁ ταπεινῶν καὶ ἀνυψῶν 12 Taunt never the disconsolate; God, who sees all, casts men down and lifts them up. 12
13 μὴ ἀροτρία ψεῦδος ἐ{P'} ἀδελφῷ σου μηδὲ φίλῳ τὸ ὅμοιον ποίει 13 Not against thy own brother trump up the charge; nor thy neighbour either. 13
Noli amare mendacium adversus fratrem tuum,
neque in amicum similiter facias.
14 μὴ θέλε ψεύδεσθαι πᾶν ψεῦδος ὁ γὰρ ἐνδελεχισμὸς αὐτοῦ οὐκ εἰς ἀγαθόν 14 Every breath of falsehood avoid in thy speech; so ill grows the habit of it. 14
Noli velle mentiri omne mendacium:
assiduitas enim illius non est bona.
15 μὴ ἀδολέσχει ἐν πλήθει πρεσβυτέρων καὶ μὴ δευτερώσῃς λόγον ἐν προσευχῇ σου 15 Idle talk becomes thee not, when thou sittest with the elders in council, nor, when thou prayest, repetition of thy prayer. 15
Noli verbosus esse in multitudine presbyterorum,
et non iteres verbum in oratione tua.
16 μὴ μισήσῃς ἐπίπονον ἐργασίαν καὶ γεωργίαν ὑπὸ ὑψίστου ἐκτισμένην 16 At toil repine not; the farmer’s trade is of divine appointment. 16
Non oderis laboriosa opera,
et rusticationem creatam ab Altissimo.
17 μὴ προσλογίζου σεαυτὸν ἐν πλήθει 18 ταπείνωσον σφόδρα τὴν ψυχήν σου 19 ἁμαρτωλῶν μνήσθητι ὅτι ὀργὴ οὐ χρονιεῖ 17 When sinners abound, be not thou of their company; 18 bethink thee rather, how swiftly comes vengeance, 19 and so curb thy unruly spirits; for sinful flesh, fire and worm. 17
Non te reputes in multitudine indisciplinatorum.
18
Memento iræ, quoniam non tardabit.
19
Humilia valde spiritum tuum,
quoniam vindicta carnis impii ignis et vermis.
21 Thou hast a good wife, a thrifty woman that has thrown in her lot, in the fear of the Lord, with thine; do not leave her; that modesty of hers is a grace gold cannot buy. 22 The slave that works for thee faithfully, the hireling that is pledged to thy service, injure not; 23 a thrifty slave thou shouldst love as thy own self, not baulking him of liberty or leaving him to starve. 24 Cattle thou hast; tend them well, nor part with them while they do thee good service. 25 Thou hast sons; train them to bear the yoke from their youth up. 26 Thou hast daughters; keep them chaste, and do not spoil them with thy smile; 27 a daughter wed is great good done, if a thrifty husband thou find her. 28 And thy own wife, if thou lovest her, never do thou forsake, nor trust thy happiness to one who is little to thy mind.

And oh, with thy whole heart 29 honour thy father, nor forget thy mother’s pangs; 30 bethink thee, that without them thou hadst had no being, and repay the service they have done thee.
20

Noli prævaricari in amicum pecuniam differentem,
neque fratrem carissimum auro spreveris.
21
Noli discedere a muliere sensata et bona,
quam sortitus es in timore Domini:
gratia enim verecundiæ illius super aurum.
22
Non lædas servum in veritate operantem,
neque mercenarium dantem animam suam.
23
Servus sensatus sit tibi dilectus quasi anima tua:
non defraudes illum libertate,
neque inopem derelinquas illum.
24
Pecora tibi sunt, attende illis:
et si sunt utilia, perseverent apud te.
25
Filii tibi sunt? erudi illos,
et curva illos a pueritia illorum.
26
In toto corde tuo
29
honora patrem tuum,
et gemitus matris tuæ ne obliviscaris:
30
32 He made thee; wilt thou not devote all thy powers to his love? Wilt thou leave his ministers unbefriended? 33 Rather, with all thy soul fear God, and to his priests give their due; with gift of the consecrated shoulder clear thyself of what is owing. 34 The priests must have their share, by law prescribed, of first-fruits and of offering for transgression; even if thou hast committed a fault in ignorance, a little is claimed for thy cleansing. 35 The gift of the consecrated shoulder thou must make to the Lord, and the offering of all that is dedicated, and the holy first-fruits; 36 moreover, thou must open thy hand to the poor; so thy atonement shall be perfect, and perfect thy blessing. 31

In tota anima tua time Dominum,
et sacerdotes illius sanctifica.
32
In omni virtute tua dilige eum qui te fecit,
et ministros ejus ne derelinquas.
33
Honora Deum ex tota anima tua,
et honorifica sacerdotes,
et propurga te cum brachiis.
34
35
Datum brachiorum tuorum,
et sacrificium sanctificationis offeres Domino,
et initia sanctorum.
36
Et pauperi porrige manum tuam,
ut perficiatur propitiatio et benedictio tua.
37 χάρις δόματος ἔναντι παντὸς ζῶντος καὶ ἐπὶ νεκρῷ μὴ ἀποκωλύσῃς χάριν 38 μὴ ὑστέρει ἀπὸ κλαιόντων καὶ μετὰ πενθούντων πένθησον 39 μὴ ὄκνει ἐπισκέπτεσθαι ἄρρωστον ἄνθρωπον ἐκ γὰρ τῶν τοιούτων ἀγαπηθήσῃ 40 ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς λόγοις σου μιμνῄσκου τὰ ἔσχατά σου καὶ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα οὐχ ἁμαρτήσεις 37 No living man but is thankful for the gift given; and it is ill done to withhold thy favours even from the dead. 38 Fail not to comfort the distressed, let the mourner have thee for his escort. 39 Never tire of visiting the sick; no surer way of winning thy neighbour’s love. 40 Remember at all times what thou must come to at the last, and thou shalt never do amiss. 37
Gratia dati in conspectu omnis viventis,
et mortuo non prohibeas gratiam.
38
Non desis plorantibus in consolatione,
et cum lugentibus ambula.
39
Non te pigeat visitare infirmum:
ex his enim in dilectione firmaberis.
40
In omnibus operibus tuis memorare novissima tua,
et in æternum non peccabis.
