1 ἄμπελος εὐκληματοῦσα Ισραηλ ὁ καρπὸς αὐτῆς εὐθηνῶν κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν καρπῶν αὐτοῦ ἐπλήθυνεν τὰ θυσιαστήρια κατὰ τὰ ἀγαθὰ τῆς γῆς αὐτοῦ ᾠκοδόμησεν στήλας 2 ἐμέρισαν καρδίας αὐτῶν νῦν ἀφανισθήσονται αὐτὸς κατασκάψει τὰ θυσιαστήρια αὐτῶν ταλαιπωρήσουσιν αἱ στῆλαι αὐτῶν | 1 A spreading vine is yonder vine of Israel, and fruit of him matches leaf. Rich, fertile soil; alas, how rich in altars, in sacred trees how fertile! 2 A race half loyal, half false, but the penalty must be paid in full; those altars God himself will devote to extinction, strip those trees bare.[1] | 1 Vitis frondosa Israël, fructus adæquatus est ei: secundum multitudinem fructus sui multiplicavit altaria, juxta ubertatem terræ suæ exuberavit simulacris. What will he do to us? 4 All is vain promise and making of treaties; never a furrow in your land but shall yield the bitter fruit of punishment.[2] | 3 Quia nunc dicent: Non est rex nobis, non enim timemus Dominum; et rex quid faciet nobis? 5 τῷ μόσχῳ τοῦ οἴκου Ων παροικήσουσιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες Σαμάρειαν ὅτι ἐπένθησεν ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ ἐ{P'} αὐτόν καὶ καθὼς παρεπίκραναν αὐτόν ἐπιχαροῦνται ἐπὶ τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ ὅτι μετῳκίσθη ἀ{P'} αὐτοῦ 6 καὶ αὐτὸν εἰς Ἀσσυρίους δήσαντες ἀπήνεγκαν ξένια τῷ βασιλεῖ Ιαριμ ἐν δόματι Εφραιμ δέξεται καὶ αἰσχυνθήσεται Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ βουλῇ αὐτοῦ 7 ἀπέρριψεν Σαμάρεια βασιλέα αὐτῆς ὡς φρύγανον ἐπὶ προσώπου ὕδατος 8 καὶ ἐξαρθήσονται βωμοὶ Ων ἁμαρτήματα τοῦ Ισραηλ ἄκανθαι καὶ τρίβολοι ἀναβήσονται ἐπὶ τὰ θυσιαστήρια αὐτῶν καὶ ἐροῦσιν τοῖς ὄρεσιν καλύψατε ἡμᾶς καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς πέσατε ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς | 5 Calf[3] of Bethaven, the folk of Samaria once honoured, what ado is here! Mourns people and writhes priest at the passing of its glory; 6 carried off, now, into Assyria, for the pleasure of a ruthless king; fooled is Ephraim, Israel’s hopes have played him false. 7 Like foam on the river Samaria sees her king pass by; 8 and with that, vanish the hill-shrines of false worship, Israel’s darling sin; grows thorn and thistle on their altars; no prayer have the men of Israel now but that mountains should fall on them, hills should bury them alive. | 5 Vaccas Bethaven coluerunt habitatores Samariæ; quia luxit super eum populus ejus, et æditui ejus super eum exsultaverunt in gloria ejus, quia migravit ab eo. 9 ἀ{F'} οὗ οἱ βουνοί ἥμαρτεν Ισραηλ ἐκεῖ ἔστησαν οὐ μὴ καταλάβῃ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ βουνῷ πόλεμος ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἀδικίας | 9 Old is the tale of Israel’s guilt, old as what befell at Gabaa; there stood they unmoved; was it not at Gabaa the tide of battle reached them, battle against the champions of wrong?[4] | 9 Ex diebus Gabaa peccavit Israël; ibi steterunt. Non comprehendet eos in Gabaa prælium super filios iniquitatis. |
10 ἦλθεν παιδεῦσαι αὐτούς καὶ συναχθήσονται ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς λαοὶ ἐν τῷ παιδεύεσθαι αὐτοὺς ἐν ταῖς δυσὶν ἀδικίαις αὐτῶν 11 Εφραιμ δάμαλις δεδιδαγμένη ἀγαπᾶν νεῖκος ἐγὼ δὲ ἐπελεύσομαι ἐπὶ τὸ κάλλιστον τοῦ τραχήλου αὐτῆς ἐπιβιβῶ Εφραιμ καὶ παρασιωπήσομαι Ιουδαν ἐνισχύσει αὐτῷ Ιακωβ | 10 A jealous chastiser I will be to them; twofold their guilt, and many the nations I will muster for their chastisement. 11 Heifer that has learned the welcome task of the threshing-floor, such is Ephraim; that sleek neck of hers I have spared till now; now she is to be harnessed; when Juda goes a-ploughing, Jacob it shall be that breaks the clods for him.[5] | 10 Juxta desiderium meum corripiam eos: congregabuntur super eos populi, cum corripientur propter duas iniquitates suas. 12 σπείρατε ἑαυτοῖς εἰς δικαιοσύνην τρυγήσατε εἰς καρπὸν ζωῆς φωτίσατε ἑαυτοῖς φῶς γνώσεως ἐκζητήσατε τὸν κύριον ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν γενήματα δικαιοσύνης ὑμῖν 13 ἵνα τί παρεσιωπήσατε ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῆς ἐτρυγήσατε ἐφάγετε καρπὸν ψευδῆ ὅτι ἤλπισας ἐν τοῖς ἅρμασίν σου ἐν πλήθει δυνάμεώς σου 14 καὶ ἐξαναστήσεται ἀπώλεια ἐν τῷ λαῷ σου καὶ πάντα τὰ περιτετειχισμένα σου οἰχήσεται ὡς ἄρχων Σαλαμαν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου Ιεροβααλ ἐν ἡμέραις πολέμου μητέρα ἐπὶ τέκνοις ἠδάφισαν 15 οὕτως ποιήσω ὑμῖν οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ ἀπὸ προσώπου κακιῶν ὑμῶν ὄρθρου ἀπερρίφησαν ἀπερρίφη βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ | 12 If mercy is to be the measure you reap by, seed of yours must be sown in right doing; there are fallow acres to be tilled. Not too late to have recourse to the Lord, waiting for him to come and bring[6] you redress! 13 But alas, shameful furrows[7] they were you traced, and what came of it? A harvest of wrong, fruit that cheated you in the tasting! So thou wouldst trust in thy own devices, in thy own warrior strength? 14 Believe me, there shall be turmoil among thy folk, and all thy strongholds shall fall, as fell Salmana before Jerobaal[8] when the day was won; fell child, fell mother, dashed to pieces. 15 So much shall yonder Bethel countervail the heinousness of your guilt! |
12 Seminate vobis in justitia, et metite in ore misericordiæ. Innovate vobis novale; tempus autem requirendi Dominum, cum venerit qui docebit vos justitiam. Arastis impietatem, iniquitatem messuistis: comedistis frugem mendacii, quia confisus es in viis tuis, in multitudine fortium tuorum. Consurget tumultus in populo tuo; et omnes munitiones tuæ vastabuntur, sicut vastatus est Salmana a domo ejus qui judicavit Baal in die prælii, matre super filios allisa. Sic fecit vobis Bethel, a facie malitiæ nequitiarum vestrarum. |
[1] This verse is more easily understood if we suppose (as is most likely) that the Israelites were not clear in their own minds whether the hill-shrines, etc. were devoted to the worship of the true God or not.
[2] Literally, ‘For now they will be saying, We have no king, because we do not fear God; what will the king do to (or, for) us? For now they speak perjured words in making a treaty; therefore judgement springs up in their furrows like hemlock’. It is hard to feel certain about the meaning or bearing of the passage.
[3] ‘Calf’; so the Septuagint Greek. The Hebrew text, like the Latin version, gives ‘heifers’, followed by a masculine singular pronoun in the rest of the sentence.
[4] Cf. 9.9 above. Here, as there, some think the reference is to Jg. 20; but it may easily be to some incident not elsewhere recorded.
[5] The last part of this verse is usually translated, ‘Juda shall plough, and Jacob shall break the clods for himself’. But the expression ‘for himself’ seems curiously inappropriate.
[6] The verb used in the Hebrew text may mean either ‘rain down’ or ‘teach’.
[7] ‘Shameful furrows’; it can hardly be a coincidence that the Hebrew verb used can mean either ‘ploughing’ or ‘carving images’.
[8] According to the Hebrew text ‘as Salman (quite differently spelt) destroyed Beth-arbel’, an event not elsewhere alluded to.
