2 Gone the hero and the warrior, judge and prophet, diviner and senator, 3 captain of the watch, and nobleman, and counsellor, and skilful workman, and master of charms. 4 Only boys will be left to rule, and wantonness shall govern all; 5 the citizens coming to blows, neighbour falling out with neighbour; for age and rank there shall be no reverence. 6 Here is one catching hold of his own brother, his own house-mate, What (says he) hast thou a coat to thy back? Be our chieftain, then; take these ruins into thy keeping. 7 And the other answers, Who, I? Nay, I have no doctor’s skill. As for my house, there is neither bread nor coat in it; ruler thou shalt never make of me. 8 Jerusalem in ruins, Juda lying prostrate! Whispering and scheming of theirs defied the Lord, challenged his divine scrutiny. 9 Their hang-dog looks betray them; they publish their guilt abroad, like the men of Sodom, making no secret of it. Ill-fated souls, retribution has come upon them. 1

Ecce enim Dominator, Dominus exercituum,
auferet a Jerusalem et a Juda
validum et fortem,
omne robur panis, et omne robor aquæ;
2
fortem, et virum bellatorem,
judicem, et prophetam, et ariolum, et senem;
3
4
Et dabo pueros principes eorum,
et effeminati dominabuntur eis;
5
et irruet populus, vir ad virum,
et unusquisque ad proximum suum;
tumultuabitur puer contra senem,
et ignobilis contra nobilem.
6
Apprehendet enim vir fratrem suum,
domesticum patris sui:
Vestimentum tibi est, princeps esto noster,
ruina autem hæc sub manu tua.
7
nolite constituere me principem populi.
8
Ruit enim Jerusalem, et Judas concidit,
quia lingua eorum et adinventiones eorum contra Dominum,
ut provocarent oculos majestatis ejus.
9
Agnitio vultus eorum respondit eis;
His reward is earned; 11 but woe betide the sinner! He shall be repaid for his ill deeds. 12 My people has been despoiled by the tyrants that rule it; women have gained power over it; those who call thee happy, my people, are deceiving thee, are luring thee into false paths. 13 Even now the Lord stands ready to hold his assize, waits there to pass judgement on all nations. 14 The Lord will enter into a reckoning with the senators and the rulers of his people: You have made spoil of the vineyard, your houses are full of the plunder you have taken from the oppressed; 15 what means it, that you ride roughshod over my people, that you spurn the right of friendless folk? Such warning he gives you, the Lord God of hosts. 10
Dicite justo quoniam bene,
quoniam fructum adinventionum suarum comedet.
11
Væ impio in malum!
retributio enim manuum ejus fiet ei.
12
Populum meum exactores sui spoliaverunt,
et mulieres dominatæ sunt eis.
Popule meus, qui te beatum dicunt, ipsi te decipiunt,
et viam gressuum tuorum dissipant.
13
Stat ad judicandum Dominus,
et stat ad judicandos populos.
14
Dominus ad judicium veniet
cum senibus populi sui, et principibus ejus;
vos enim depasti estis vineam,
et rapina pauperis in domo vestra.
15
Quare atteritis populum meum,
et facies pauperum commolitis?
dicit Dominus Deus exercituum.
16 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν ὑψώθησαν αἱ θυγατέρες Σιων καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὑψηλῷ τραχήλῳ καὶ ἐν νεύμασιν ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ τῇ πορείᾳ τῶν ποδῶν ἅμα σύρουσαι τοὺς χιτῶνας καὶ τοῖς ποσὶν ἅμα παίζουσαι 17 καὶ ταπεινώσει ὁ θεὸς ἀρχούσας θυγατέρας Σιων καὶ κύριος ἀποκαλύψει τὸ σχῆμα αὐτῶν 18 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἀφελεῖ κύριος τὴν δόξαν τοῦ ἱματισμοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς κόσμους αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ ἐμπλόκια καὶ τοὺς κοσύμβους καὶ τοὺς μηνίσκους 19 καὶ τὸ κάθεμα καὶ τὸν κόσμον τοῦ προσώπου αὐτῶν 20 καὶ τὴν σύνθεσιν τοῦ κόσμου τῆς δόξης καὶ τοὺς χλιδῶνας καὶ τὰ ψέλια καὶ τὸ ἐμπλόκιον καὶ τὰ περιδέξια καὶ τοὺς δακτυλίους καὶ τὰ ἐνώτια 21 καὶ τὰ περιπόρφυρα καὶ τὰ μεσοπόρφυρα 22 καὶ τὰ ἐπιβλήματα τὰ κατὰ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ τὰ διαφανῆ λακωνικὰ 23 καὶ τὰ βύσσινα καὶ τὰ ὑακίνθινα καὶ τὰ κόκκινα καὶ τὴν βύσσον σὺν χρυσίῳ καὶ ὑακίνθῳ συγκαθυφασμένα καὶ θέριστρα κατάκλιτα 24 καὶ ἔσται ἀντὶ ὀσμῆς ἡδείας κονιορτός καὶ ἀντὶ ζώνης σχοινίῳ ζώσῃ καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ κόσμου τῆς κεφαλῆς τοῦ χρυσίου φαλάκρωμα ἕξεις διὰ τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ χιτῶνος τοῦ μεσοπορφύρου περιζώσῃ σάκκον 16 This, too, the Lord says: See what airs they put on, the women-folk of Sion, walk head in air, look about them with glancing eyes, click the trappings on their feet with mincing steps. Ay, but the Lord has his doom ready for them; 17 bald of head and bare of temple the women of Sion shall know it. 18 In one day the Lord will sweep away all their finery, the shoes with the rest; locket, 19 and collar, necklace and bracelet and veil; 20 hair-pin, ankle-ring, chain, scent-box, pendant, 21 signet-ring and nose-ring; 22 gala dress and gown and scarf, bodkin 23 and mirror and shawl and riband and kerchief. 24 There will be new fashions then; stench for scent, hempen rope for waist-band, baldness for curls, and hair shirt for stomacher. 16

Et dixit Dominus:
Pro eo quod elevatæ sunt filiæ Sion,
et ambulaverunt extento collo,
et nutibus oculorum ibant,
et plaudebant, ambulabant pedibus suis,
et composito gradu incedebant;
17
decalvabit Dominus verticem filiarum Sion,
et Dominus crinem earum nudabit.
18
In die illa auferet Dominus ornamentum calceamentum,
19
et lunulas, et torques,
et monilia, et armillas, et mitras,
20
et discriminalia, et periscelidas, et murenulas,
et olfactoriola, et inaures,
21
et annulos, et gemmas in fronte pendentes,
22
et mutatoria, et palliola,
et linteamina, et acus,
23
et specula, et sindones,
et vittas, et theristra.
24
Et erit pro suavi odore fœtor,
et pro zona funiculus,
et pro crispanti crine calvitium,
et pro fascia pectorali cilicium.
25 καὶ ὁ υἱός σου ὁ κάλλιστος ὃν ἀγαπᾷς μαχαίρᾳ πεσεῖται καὶ οἱ ἰσχύοντες ὑμῶν μαχαίρᾳ πεσοῦνται 26 καὶ ταπεινωθήσονται καὶ πενθήσουσιν αἱ θῆκαι τοῦ κόσμου ὑμῶν καὶ καταλειφθήσῃ μόνη καὶ εἰς τὴν γῆν ἐδαφισθήσῃ 25 Of the men-folk, too, all that is fairest shall fall by the sword, all that is bravest, slain in battle. 26 See where she sits on the ground desolate, every gateway of hers full of sorrow and lament! 25
Pulcherrimi quoque viri tui gladio cadent,
et fortes tui in prælio.
26
Et mœrebunt atque lugebunt portæ ejus,
et desolata in terra sedebit.
