1 ἀκούσατε ταῦτα οἶκος Ιακωβ οἱ κεκλημένοι τῷ ὀνόματι Ισραηλ καὶ οἱ ἐξ Ιουδα ἐξελθόντες οἱ ὀμνύοντες τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου θεοῦ Ισραηλ μιμνῃσκόμενοι οὐ μετὰ ἀληθείας οὐδὲ μετὰ δικαιοσύνης 2 καὶ ἀντεχόμενοι τῷ ὀνόματι τῆς πόλεως τῆς ἁγίας καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τοῦ Ισραηλ ἀντιστηριζόμενοι κύριος σαβαωθ ὄνομα αὐτῷ 3 τὰ πρότερα ἔτι ἀνήγγειλα καὶ ἐκ τοῦ στόματός μου ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἀκουστὸν ἐγένετο ἐξάπινα ἐποίησα καὶ ἐπῆλθεν 4 γινώσκω ἐγὼ ὅτι σκληρὸς εἶ καὶ νεῦρον σιδηροῦν ὁ τράχηλός σου καὶ τὸ μέτωπόν σου χαλκοῦν 5 καὶ ἀνήγγειλά σοι πάλαι πρὶν ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ σὲ ἀκουστόν σοι ἐποίησα μὴ εἴπῃς ὅτι τὰ εἴδωλά μου ἐποίησαν καὶ μὴ εἴπῃς ὅτι τὰ γλυπτὰ καὶ τὰ χωνευτὰ ἐνετείλατό μοι 6 ἠκούσατε πάντα καὶ ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἔγνωτε ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀκουστά σοι ἐποίησα τὰ καινὰ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἃ μέλλει γίνεσθαι καὶ οὐκ εἶπας 7 νῦν γίνεται καὶ οὐ πάλαι καὶ οὐ προτέραις ἡμέραις ἤκουσας αὐτά μὴ εἴπῃς ὅτι ναί γινώσκω αὐτά 8 οὔτε ἔγνως οὔτε ἠπίστω οὔτε ἀ{P'} ἀρχῆς ἤνοιξά σου τὰ ὦτα ἔγνων γὰρ ὅτι ἀθετῶν ἀθετήσεις καὶ ἄνομος ἔτι ἐκ κοιλίας κληθήσῃ 9 ἕνεκεν τοῦ ἐμοῦ ὀνόματος δείξω σοι τὸν θυμόν μου καὶ τὰ ἔνδοξά μου ἐπάξω ἐπὶ σοί ἵνα μὴ ἐξολεθρεύσω σε 10 ἰδοὺ πέπρακά σε οὐχ ἕνεκεν ἀργυρίου ἐξειλάμην δέ σε ἐκ καμίνου πτωχείας 11 ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ ποιήσω σοι ὅτι τὸ ἐμὸν ὄνομα βεβηλοῦται καὶ τὴν δόξαν μου ἑτέρῳ οὐ δώσω 1 A message for you, sons of Jacob, heirs of Israel’s name, sprung from the stock of Juda, that take oath in the Lord’s name, of Israel’s God the memory preserve, but not in faith, but not in loyalty! 2 Townsmen they are still reckoned of a holy city; still on Israel’s God, the Lord of hosts, lean they for support. 3 What happened in times past, I had foretold long before; warning was uttered, and in the public ear; then, suddenly, I would set to work, and the prophecy was fulfilled. 4 I knew well what an untamed creature thou art, neck stubborn as an iron hawser, forehead intractable as bronze; 5 I would warn thee from the first, tell thee what was coming before it came; never shouldst thou say this was the work of thy false gods, the will of idols thou didst carve and cast. 6 Consider closely the things I warned thee of, was there any foretelling them? Ever I reveal to thee, long before, things kept secret from thy knowledge; 7 events that are coming about now, unheard of then.[1] When they are yet beyond knowledge, I reveal them; not thine to boast, it was no news to thee. 8 And still thou wouldst not listen, thou wouldst be ignorant still; when I prophesied to thee in times past, I could get no hearing; what hope from the traitor but of treason? I know thee a rebel from thy birth. 9 If I reprieve thee from my vengeance, it is my own honour demands it; curb thee I must, for my own sake, or wouldst thou rush to thy doom. 10 I have tested thee, but not as silver is tested; even in the furnace of affliction, thou wast already my choice. 11 Honour, my own honour demands it; how should I suffer my name to be reviled, or the worship that belongs to me given to another? 1

Audite hæc, domus Jacob,
qui vocamini nomine Israël,
et de aquis Juda existis;
qui juratis in nomine Domini,
et Dei Israël recordamini
non in veritate neque in justitia.
2
De civitate enim sancta vocati sunt,
et super Deum Israël constabiliti sunt:
Dominus exercituum nomen ejus.
3
Priora ex tunc annuntiavi,
et ex ore meo exierunt, et audita feci ea:
repente operatus sum, et venerunt.
4
Scivi enim quia durus es tu,
et nervus ferreus cervix tua,
et frons tua ærea.
5
Prædixi tibi ex tunc;
antequam venirent, indicavi tibi,
ne forte diceres: Idola mea fecerunt hæc,
et sculptilia mea et conflatilia mandaverunt ista.
6
Quæ audisti, vide omnia;
vos autem, num annuntiastis?
Audita feci tibi nova ex tunc,
et conservata sunt quæ nescis.
7
Nunc creata sunt et non ex tunc;
et ante diem, et non audisti ea,
ne forte dicas: Ecce ego cognovi ea.
8
Neque audisti, neque cognovisti,
neque ex tunc aperta est auris tua:
scio enim quia prævaricans prævaricaberis,
et transgressorem ex utero vocavi te.
9
Propter nomen meum longe faciam furorem meum,
et laude mea infrenabo te,
ne intereas.
10
Ecce excoxi te, sed non quasi argentum;
elegi te in camino paupertatis.
11
Propter me, propter me faciam,
ut non blasphemer;
et gloriam meam alteri non dabo.
12 ἄκουέ μου Ιακωβ καὶ Ισραηλ ὃν ἐγὼ καλῶ ἐγώ εἰμι πρῶτος καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα 13 καὶ ἡ χείρ μου ἐθεμελίωσεν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἡ δεξιά μου ἐστερέωσεν τὸν οὐρανόν καλέσω αὐτούς καὶ στήσονται ἅμα 14 καὶ συναχθήσονται πάντες καὶ ἀκούσονται τίς αὐτοῖς ἀνήγγειλεν ταῦτα ἀγαπῶν σε ἐποίησα τὸ θέλημά σου ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα τοῦ ἆραι σπέρμα Χαλδαίων 15 ἐγὼ ἐλάλησα ἐγὼ ἐκάλεσα ἤγαγον αὐτὸν καὶ εὐόδωσα τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ 12 Listen then, Jacob; listen to me, thou Israel to whom my call was sent. I am still the same; before all, and at the end of all, I am. 13 My hand fashioned the heavens, my fingers measured the span of earth; it is my command holds them in their place. 14 Assemble, all you nations, and listen to me; tell me which of your gods has prophesied it,[2] The Lord, in his great love for Israel,[3] means to subdue Babylon to his will, to bare his arm among the Chaldeans? 15 But I did, I foretold it; it was I that brought the conqueror on his way, so that it lay smooth before him. 12
Audi me, Jacob,
et Israël, quem ego voco:
ego ipse, ego primus,
et ego novissimus.
13
Manus quoque mea fundavit terram,
et dextera mea mensa est cælos;
ego vocabo eos,
et stabunt simul.
14
Congregamini, omnes vos, et audite:
quis de eis annuntiavit hæc?
Dominus dilexit eum, faciet voluntatem suam in Babylone,
et brachium suum in Chaldæis.
15
Ego, ego locutus sum, et vocavi eum;
adduxi eum, et directa est via ejus.
And now that it is happening, it is the Lord God, it is the spirit of the Lord God, that sends me to you.[4] 17 Here is a message from the Lord, thy ransomer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord thy God, ever ready to teach thee what it concerns thee to know, guide thee on the path thou treadest. 18 If thou hadst but heeded my warnings! Then had a flowing stream of peace been with thee, a full tide of the Lord’s favour; 19 thy own race, thy own stock, should have been numberless as the sand or the pebbles on the sea-beach; the remembrance of thee should never have been cut off from my merciful regard.[5] 20 Away from Babylon, have done with Chaldea, let this be your triumphant watchword; make it heard everywhere, publish it to the ends of the earth, tell them the Lord has ransomed his servant Jacob; 21 they did not go thirsty when he led them through the desert; he could bring water out of the rock for them, cleave the hard rock and make the water flow. 22 But for the rebellious, the Lord says, there is no peace. 16
Accedite ad me et audite hoc:
non a principio in abscondito locutus sum:
ex tempore antequam fieret, ibi eram:
et nunc Dominus Deus misit me,
et spiritus ejus.
17
Hæc dicit Dominus, redemptor tuus,
Sanctus Israël:
Ego Dominus Deus tuus,
docens te utilia,
gubernans te in via qua ambulas.
18
Utinam attendisses mandata mea:
facta fuisset sicut flumen pax tua,
et justitia tua sicut gurgites maris:
19
et fuisset quasi arena semen tuum,
et stirps uteri tui ut lapilli ejus;
non interisset et non fuisset attritum
nomen ejus a facie mea.
20
Egredimini de Babylone, fugite a Chaldæis,
in voce exsultationis annuntiate:
auditum facite hoc,
et efferte illud usque ad extrema terræ.
Dicite: Redemit Dominus
servum suum Jacob.
21
Non sitierunt in deserto, cum educeret eos:
aquam de petra produxit eis,
et scidit petram, et fluxerunt aquæ.
22
Non est pax impiis, dicit Dominus.
