1 καὶ ἐγένετο με{Q'} ἡμέρας πλείους μετὰ τὸ καταπαῦσαι κύριον τὸν Ισραηλ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν κυκλόθεν καὶ Ἰησοῦς πρεσβύτερος προβεβηκὼς ταῖς ἡμέραις 2 καὶ συνεκάλεσεν Ἰησοῦς πάντας τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ καὶ τὴν γερουσίαν αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς δικαστὰς αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς ἐγὼ γεγήρακα καὶ προβέβηκα ταῖς ἡμέραις 3 ὑμεῖς δὲ ἑωράκατε ὅσα ἐποίησεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τούτοις ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν ὅτι κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ὁ ἐκπολεμήσας ὑμῖν 4 ἴδετε ὅτι ἐπέρριφα ὑμῖν τὰ ἔθνη τὰ καταλελειμμένα ὑμῖν ταῦτα ἐν τοῖς κλήροις εἰς τὰς φυλὰς ὑμῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ Ιορδάνου πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἃ ἐξωλέθρευσα καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς μεγάλης ὁριεῖ ἐπὶ δυσμὰς ἡλίου 5 κύριος δὲ ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν οὗτος ἐξολεθρεύσει αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν ἕως ἂν ἀπόλωνται καὶ ἀποστελεῖ αὐτοῖς τὰ θηρία τὰ ἄγρια ἕως ἂν ἐξολεθρεύσῃ αὐτοὺς καὶ τοὺς βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν καὶ κατακληρονομήσατε τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν καθὰ ἐλάλησεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ὑμῖν 1 The Lord had granted Israel long years of peace, with all their neighbours subject to them, when Josue, now grown to be a very old man, 2 summoned all Israel, with their elders, judges, chieftains and magistrates, and spoke thus to them. I am an old man now, and near my end, 3 and you can see for yourselves how the Lord God has fought on your side against the nations that surround you; 4 how he has divided up the land between you, from Jordan on the east to the shores of the open sea. Many nations are still left; 5 and these, too, the Lord your God will dispossess, making room for you to occupy their lands, in fulfilment of his promise.
7 You must not consort with these nations that survive, and learn to swear by the names of their gods, or enslave yourselves to their worship; 8 you must keep true to the Lord your God, as you have till now. 9 If you will do that, the Lord God will dispossess great nations, powerful nations, to make room for you; none will be able to withstand your onslaught. 10 A thousand enemies will take flight before a single man of your company, so well the Lord will keep his promise to fight on your side. 11 On peril of your lives, then, keep your hearts true to the Lord your God. 12 If you consent to follow closely in the false ways of neighbouring peoples, allying yourselves with them by marriage and making friends of them, 13 I warn you here and now that the Lord will never dispossess them to make room for you. Evermore they will be at your side, ready to snare and entrap you and catch your feet unawares, eyesores to blind you; and at last he will dispossess you instead, banish you utterly from this fair land he has given you for your home.
14 ἐγὼ δὲ ἀποτρέχω τὴν ὁδὸν καθὰ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ γνώσεσθε τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμῶν καὶ τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν διότι οὐ διέπεσεν εἷς λόγος ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν λόγων ὧν εἶπεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν πρὸς πάντα τὰ ἀνήκοντα ὑμῖν οὐ διεφώνησεν ἐξ αὐτῶν 15 καὶ ἔσται ὃν τρόπον ἥκει ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τὰ καλά ἃ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς ὑμᾶς οὕτως ἐπάξει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τὰ πονηρά ἕως ἂν ἐξολεθρεύσῃ ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τῆς ἀγαθῆς ταύτης ἧς ἔδωκεν κύριος ὑμῖν 16 ἐν τῷ παραβῆναι ὑμᾶς τὴν διαθήκην κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν ἣν ἐνετείλατο ὑμῖν καὶ πορευθέντες λατρεύσητε θεοῖς ἑτέροις καὶ προσκυνήσητε αὐτοῖς 14 The time has come when I must go the way all mortal things go at last; and I would have you cherish this message deep in your hearts. Of all the promises the Lord made you, not one has missed fulfilment; 15 and as he has made good his promises by granting you the prosperity you now enjoy, so he will make good his threats, by dispossessing you and banishing you from this fair land of yours, 16 if you do not keep true to the covenant the Lord your God has made with you. Enslave yourselves to the worship of other gods, and the Lord’s vengeance will come upon you swiftly and suddenly, till the fair land he has given you knows you no more.
