1 καὶ σύ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου προφήτευσον ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη Ισραηλ καὶ εἰπὸν τοῖς ὄρεσιν τοῦ Ισραηλ ἀκούσατε λόγον κυρίου 2 τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν εἶπεν ὁ ἐχθρὸς ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς εὖγε ἔρημα αἰώνια εἰς κατάσχεσιν ἡμῖν ἐγενήθη 3 διὰ τοῦτο προφήτευσον καὶ εἰπόν τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἀντὶ τοῦ ἀτιμασθῆναι ὑμᾶς καὶ μισηθῆναι ὑμᾶς ὑπὸ τῶν κύκλῳ ὑμῶν τοῦ εἶναι ὑμᾶς εἰς κατάσχεσιν τοῖς καταλοίποις ἔθνεσιν καὶ ἀνέβητε λάλημα γλώσσῃ καὶ εἰς ὀνείδισμα ἔθνεσιν 4 διὰ τοῦτο ὄρη Ισραηλ ἀκούσατε λόγον κυρίου τάδε λέγει κύριος τοῖς ὄρεσιν καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς καὶ ταῖς φάραγξιν καὶ τοῖς χειμάρροις καὶ τοῖς ἐξηρημωμένοις καὶ ἠφανισμένοις καὶ ταῖς πόλεσιν ταῖς ἐγκαταλελειμμέναις αἳ ἐγένοντο εἰς προνομὴν καὶ εἰς καταπάτημα τοῖς καταλειφθεῖσιν ἔθνεσιν περικύκλῳ 5 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος εἰ μὴν ἐν πυρὶ θυμοῦ μου ἐλάλησα ἐπὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ἔθνη καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν Ιδουμαίαν πᾶσαν ὅτι ἔδωκαν τὴν γῆν μου ἑαυτοῖς εἰς κατάσχεσιν με{T'} εὐφροσύνης ἀτιμάσαντες ψυχὰς τοῦ ἀφανίσαι ἐν προνομῇ 6 διὰ τοῦτο προφήτευσον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν τοῦ Ισραηλ καὶ εἰπὸν τοῖς ὄρεσιν καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς καὶ ταῖς φάραγξιν καὶ ταῖς νάπαις τάδε λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ ζήλῳ μου καὶ ἐν τῷ θυμῷ μου ἐλάλησα ἀντὶ τοῦ ὀνειδισμοὺς ἐθνῶν ἐνέγκαι ὑμᾶς 7 διὰ τοῦτο ἐγὼ ἀρῶ τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη τὰ περικύκλῳ ὑμῶν οὗτοι τὴν ἀτιμίαν αὐτῶν λήμψονται 1 And now, son of man, to the mountains of Israel address thy prophecy, and give them my divine message, 2 comforting them, in the name of the Lord God, for the taunts of the enemy, that think to claim possession of their ancient strongholds. 3 Thus shall thy word of prophecy begin: Desolate you lie, the Lord God says, and overrun by the invader; aliens have the lordship of you, and your name is on men’s lips, a byword of common talk. 4 Yet here is word for you, mountains of Israel, from the Lord God; word from him for crag and hill, ravine and valley and barren upland, ruined wall and deserted city, empty now and a mockery to their neighbours! 5 On Edom, on all the Gentiles that fell to and feasted on lands of mine, marked them down for pillage, my jealous love pronounces doom. 6 A promise, then, from the Lord God to every mountain and hill, every upland and valley in the land of Israel! Till now, the Lord God says, you have been put to the blush before your neighbours, but now my love and my indignation can contain itself no more. 7 My oath upon it, the Lord God says, these neighbours of yours shall be put to the blush in their turn. 1 Tu autem, fili hominis, propheta super montes Israël, et dices:

Montes Israël, audite verbum Domini.
2
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Eo quod dixerit inimicus de vobis: Euge,
altitudines sempiternæ in hæreditatem datæ sunt nobis:
3
propterea vaticinare, et dic:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Pro eo quod desolati estis, et conculcati per circuitum,
et facti in hæreditatem reliquis gentibus,
et ascendistis super labium linguæ et opprobrium populi,
4
propterea, montes Israël, audite verbum Domini Dei.
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus montibus et collibus,
torrentibus, vallibusque et desertis,
parietinis et urbibus derelictis,
quæ depopulatæ sunt et subsannatæ a reliquis gentibus per circuitum.
5
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Quoniam in igne zeli mei locutus sum de reliquis gentibus,
et de Idumæa universa,
quæ dederunt terram meam sibi in hæreditatem cum gaudio,
et toto corde et ex animo,
et ejecerunt eam ut vastarent:
6
idcirco vaticinare super humum Israël,
et dices montibus et collibus, jugis et vallibus:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Ecce ego in zelo meo et in furore meo locutus sum,
eo quod confusionem gentium sustinueritis.
7
Idcirco hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Ego levavi manum meam,
ut gentes quæ in circuitu vestro sunt,
ipsæ confusionem suam portent.
8 ὑμῶν δέ ὄρη Ισραηλ τὴν σταφυλὴν καὶ τὸν καρπὸν ὑμῶν καταφάγεται ὁ λαός μου ὅτι ἐγγίζουσιν τοῦ ἐλθεῖν 9 ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς καὶ ἐπιβλέψω ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς καὶ κατεργασθήσεσθε καὶ σπαρήσεσθε 10 καὶ πληθυνῶ ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς ἀνθρώπους πᾶν οἶκον Ισραηλ εἰς τέλος καὶ κατοικηθήσονται αἱ πόλεις καὶ ἡ ἠρημωμένη οἰκοδομηθήσεται 11 καὶ πληθυνῶ ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς ἀνθρώπους καὶ κτήνη καὶ κατοικιῶ ὑμᾶς ὡς τὸ ἐν ἀρχῇ ὑμῶν καὶ εὖ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς ὥσπερ τὰ ἔμπροσθεν ὑμῶν καὶ γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος 12 καὶ γεννήσω ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς ἀνθρώπους τὸν λαόν μου Ισραηλ καὶ κληρονομήσουσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ ἔσεσθε αὐτοῖς εἰς κατάσχεσιν καὶ οὐ μὴ προστεθῆτε ἔτι ἀτεκνωθῆναι ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν 13 τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν εἶπάν σοι κατέσθουσα ἀνθρώπους εἶ καὶ ἠτεκνωμένη ὑπὸ τοῦ ἔθνους σου ἐγένου 14 διὰ τοῦτο ἀνθρώπους οὐκέτι φάγεσαι καὶ τὸ ἔθνος σου οὐκ ἀτεκνώσεις ἔτι λέγει κύριος κύριος 15 καὶ οὐκ ἀκουσθήσεται οὐκέτι ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς ἀτιμία ἐθνῶν καὶ ὀνειδισμοὺς λαῶν οὐ μὴ ἀνενέγκητε λέγει κύριος κύριος 8 But you, mountains of Israel, must burgeon anew, and grow fruit for my own people to enjoy; their home-coming is not far off now. 9 Watch for me, I am coming back to you; soil of you shall be ploughed and sown anew; 10 and men, too, shall thrive on it, Israel’s full muster-roll, peopling the cities, restoring the ruins. 11 Full tale you shall have of men and beasts that thrive and multiply; I will make you populous as of old, more than of old my blessings lavish, and you shall not doubt my power. 12 Masters you shall have, and those masters my people of Israel, your rightful lords; never shall they want lands or you lords again. 13 Till now, the Lord God says, men have called thee a land that starves folk and empties cradle;[1] 14 henceforth, his will is that thou shouldst starve thy folk, bereave thy folk, no longer; 15 scoff and taunt of heathen neighbours thou wilt have none to bear, he says, nor lack men to till thee henceforward. 8
Vos autem, montes Israël, ramos vestros germinetis,
et fructum vestrum afferatis populo meo Israël:
prope enim est ut veniat.
9
Quia ecce ego ad vos, et convertar ad vos:
et arabimini, et accipietis sementem.
10
Et multiplicabo in vobis homines, omnemque domum Israël:
et habitabuntur civitates, et ruinosa instaurabuntur.
11
Et replebo vos hominibus et jumentis,
et multiplicabuntur, et crescent:
et habitare vos faciam sicut a principio,
bonisque donabo majoribus quam habuistis ab initio:
et scietis quia ego Dominus.
12
Et adducam super vos homines, populum meum Israël,
et hæreditate possidebunt te:
et eris eis in hæreditatem,
et non addes ultra ut absque eis sis.
13
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Pro eo quod dicunt de vobis:
Devoratrix hominum es, et suffocans gentem tuam:
14
propterea homines non comedes amplius,
et gentem tuam non necabis ultra,
ait Dominus Deus.
15
Nec auditam faciam in te amplius confusionem gentium,
et opprobrium populorum nequaquam portabis:
et gentem tuam non amittes amplius,
ait Dominus Deus.
16 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 17 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου οἶκος Ισραηλ κατῴκησεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐμίαναν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἀκαθαρσίαις αὐτῶν κατὰ τὴν ἀκαθαρσίαν τῆς ἀποκαθημένης ἐγενήθη ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτῶν πρὸ προσώπου μου 18 καὶ ἐξέχεα τὸν θυμόν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς 19 καὶ διέσπειρα αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰ ἔθνη καὶ ἐλίκμησα αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς χώρας κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτῶν καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν αὐτῶν ἔκρινα αὐτούς 20 καὶ εἰσήλθοσαν εἰς τὰ ἔθνη οὗ εἰσήλθοσαν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐβεβήλωσαν τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ ἅγιον ἐν τῷ λέγεσθαι αὐτούς λαὸς κυρίου οὗτοι καὶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς αὐτοῦ ἐξεληλύθασιν 21 καὶ ἐφεισάμην αὐτῶν διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ ἅγιον ὃ ἐβεβήλωσαν οἶκος Ισραηλ ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν οὗ εἰσήλθοσαν ἐκεῖ 16 This too: 17 Son of man, how the race of Israel profaned this country of theirs, when they still dwelt in it, by their lives and their likings! Cast clouts of woman were less defiling. 18 What marvel if my vengeance was let loose on them for all the blood that stained it; all the idols that polluted it? 19 What marvel if I drove them out among the nations, scattered them wide as earth, as lives and likings of theirs had deserved? 20 But alas, wherever they went among the heathen, they brought my holy name into ill repute; These are the Lord’s people, folk said, and here they are, exiled from the land he loves! 21 Should I let my holy name go unhonoured, among the heathen that harboured them? 16 Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens: 17

Fili hominis, domus Israël habitaverunt in humo sua,
et polluerunt eam in viis suis et in studiis suis:
juxta immunditiam menstruatæ facta est via eorum coram me.
18
Et effudi indignationem meam super eos
pro sanguine quem fuderunt super terram,
et in idolis suis polluerunt eam.
19
Et dispersi eos in gentes,
et ventilati sunt in terras:
juxta vias eorum et adinventiones eorum judicavi eos.
20
22 διὰ τοῦτο εἰπὸν τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ τάδε λέγει κύριος οὐχ ὑμῖν ἐγὼ ποιῶ οἶκος Ισραηλ ἀλ{L'} ἢ διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ ἅγιον ὃ ἐβεβηλώσατε ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν οὗ εἰσήλθετε ἐκεῖ 23 καὶ ἁγιάσω τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ μέγα τὸ βεβηλωθὲν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ὃ ἐβεβηλώσατε ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν καὶ γνώσονται τὰ ἔθνη ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος ἐν τῷ ἁγιασθῆναί με ἐν ὑμῖν κα{T'} ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν 24 καὶ λήμψομαι ὑμᾶς ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ ἀθροίσω ὑμᾶς ἐκ πασῶν τῶν γαιῶν καὶ εἰσάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν γῆν ὑμῶν 25 καὶ ῥανῶ ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς ὕδωρ καθαρόν καὶ καθαρισθήσεσθε ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν ἀκαθαρσιῶν ὑμῶν καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν εἰδώλων ὑμῶν καὶ καθαριῶ ὑμᾶς 26 καὶ δώσω ὑμῖν καρδίαν καινὴν καὶ πνεῦμα καινὸν δώσω ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ ἀφελῶ τὴν καρδίαν τὴν λιθίνην ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς ὑμῶν καὶ δώσω ὑμῖν καρδίαν σαρκίνην 27 καὶ τὸ πνεῦμά μου δώσω ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ ποιήσω ἵνα ἐν τοῖς δικαιώμασίν μου πορεύησθε καὶ τὰ κρίματά μου φυλάξησθε καὶ ποιήσητε 28 καὶ κατοικήσετε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἧς ἔδωκα τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν καὶ ἔσεσθέ μοι εἰς λαόν κἀγὼ ἔσομαι ὑμῖν εἰς θεόν 29 καὶ σώσω ὑμᾶς ἐκ πασῶν τῶν ἀκαθαρσιῶν ὑμῶν καὶ καλέσω τὸν σῖτον καὶ πληθυνῶ αὐτὸν καὶ οὐ δώσω ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς λιμόν 30 καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸν καρπὸν τοῦ ξύλου καὶ τὰ γενήματα τοῦ ἀγροῦ ὅπως μὴ λάβητε ὀνειδισμὸν λιμοῦ ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν 31 καὶ μνησθήσεσθε τὰς ὁδοὺς ὑμῶν τὰς πονηρὰς καὶ τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα ὑμῶν τὰ μὴ ἀγαθὰ καὶ προσοχθιεῖτε κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις ὑμῶν καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς βδελύγμασιν ὑμῶν 32 οὐ δ{I'} ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ ποιῶ λέγει κύριος κύριος γνωστὸν ἔσται ὑμῖν αἰσχύνθητε καὶ ἐντράπητε ἐκ τῶν ὁδῶν ὑμῶν οἶκος Ισραηλ 22 Give Israel, then, this message from the Lord God: It is not for your own sakes, men of Israel, that I come forward as your champion; it is for the sake of my holy name, brought into disrepute among the Gentiles who have crossed your path. 23 That great renown of mine I mean to vindicate, that is now dragged in the dust among the Gentiles, dragged in the dust because of you. The very Gentiles will recognize my power, the Lord God says, when I proclaim my majesty in their sight by delivering you.[2] 24 I mean to set you free from the power of the Gentiles, bring you home again from every part of the earth. 25 And then I will pour cleansing streams over you, to purge you from every stain you bear, purge you from the taint of your idolatry. 26 I will give you a new heart, and breathe a new spirit into you; I will take away from your breasts those hearts that are hard as stone, and give you human hearts instead. 27 I will make my spirit penetrate you, so that you will follow in the path of my law, remember and carry out my decrees. 28 So shall you make your home in the land I promised to your fathers; you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will set you free from the guilt which stains you;[3] I will send my word to the harvest, and bid it come up abundantly, from dearth spare you; 30 yield of tree and crop of earth I will multiply, and the heathen shall taunt you no longer with your starving lot. 31 Well may you think with loathing of what you were, as your minds go back to false paths and crooked aims you once followed! 32 Be assured of it, the Lord God says, it was for no deserts of yours I delivered you; blush still, men of Israel, for your crimes, hang your heads still! 22
Idcirco dices domui Israël:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Non propter vos ego faciam, domus Israël,
sed propter nomen sanctum meum,
quod polluistis in gentibus ad quas intrastis.
23
Et sanctificabo nomen meum magnum
quod pollutum est inter gentes,
quod polluistis in medio earum:
ut sciant gentes quia ego Dominus,
ait Dominus exercituum,
cum sanctificatus fuero in vobis coram eis.
24
Tollam quippe vos de gentibus,
et congregabo vos de universis terris,
et adducam vos in terram vestram.
25
Et effundam super vos aquam mundam,
et mundabimini ab omnibus inquinamentis vestris,
et ab universis idolis vestris mundabo vos.
26
Et dabo vobis cor novum,
et spiritum novum ponam in medio vestri:
et auferam cor lapideum de carne vestra,
et dabo vobis cor carneum.
27
Et spiritum meum ponam in medio vestri:
et faciam ut in præceptis meis ambuletis,
et judicia mea custodiatis et operemini.
28
Et habitabitis in terra quam dedi patribus vestris:
et eritis mihi in populum,
et ego ero vobis in Deum.
29
Et salvabo vos ex universis inquinamentis vestris:
et vocabo frumentum et multiplicabo illud,
et non imponam vobis famem.
30
33 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ καθαριῶ ὑμᾶς ἐκ πασῶν τῶν ἀνομιῶν ὑμῶν καὶ κατοικιῶ τὰς πόλεις καὶ οἰκοδομηθήσονται αἱ ἔρημοι 34 καὶ ἡ γῆ ἡ ἠφανισμένη ἐργασθήσεται ἀν{Q'} ὧν ὅτι ἠφανισμένη ἐγενήθη κα{T'} ὀφθαλμοὺς παντὸς παροδεύοντος 35 καὶ ἐροῦσιν ἡ γῆ ἐκείνη ἡ ἠφανισμένη ἐγενήθη ὡς κῆπος τρυφῆς καὶ αἱ πόλεις αἱ ἔρημοι καὶ ἠφανισμέναι καὶ κατεσκαμμέναι ὀχυραὶ ἐκάθισαν 36 καὶ γνώσονται τὰ ἔθνη ὅσα ἂν καταλειφθῶσιν κύκλῳ ὑμῶν ὅτι ἐγὼ κύριος ᾠκοδόμησα τὰς καθῃρημένας καὶ κατεφύτευσα τὰς ἠφανισμένας ἐγὼ κύριος ἐλάλησα καὶ ποιήσω 37 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἔτι τοῦτο ζητηθήσομαι τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς πληθυνῶ αὐτοὺς ὡς πρόβατα ἀνθρώπους 38 ὡς πρόβατα ἅγια ὡς πρόβατα Ιερουσαλημ ἐν ταῖς ἑορταῖς αὐτῆς οὕτως ἔσονται αἱ πόλεις αἱ ἔρημοι πλήρεις προβάτων ἀνθρώπων καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγὼ κύριος 33 This too: A time is coming when I will set you free from the guilt which stains you; when I will people your cities, rebuild your ruins; 34 when the deserted land shall be tilled anew. Desolate the passers-by saw it once; 35 now they will say, Why, it is a very garden of Eden, the country-side which once lay all uncultivated; the empty towns, all gone to rack and ruin, are walled and populous! 36 And the heathen shall know, such heathen as are your neighbours still, that I, the Lord, rebuild ruin and plant wilderness; what the Lord promises, the Lord fulfils. 37 This boon, says the Lord God, Israel shall yet have of me, as a flock thrives their manhood shall thrive. 38 See how the victim-herd throngs the streets of Jerusalem on her feast-days! Yonder empty cities shall be thronged, too, but with men; the proof of my divine power. 33

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
In die qua mundavero vos ex omnibus iniquitatibus vestris,
et inhabitari fecero urbes,
et instauravero ruinosa,
34
et terra deserta fuerit exculta,
quæ quondam erat desolata in oculis omnis viatoris,
35
dicent: Terra illa inculta facta est ut hortus voluptatis:
et civitates desertæ, et destitutæ atque suffossæ, munitæ sederunt.
36
Et scient gentes quæcumque derelictæ fuerint in circuitu vestro,
quia ego Dominus ædificavi dissipata, plantavique inculta:
ego Dominus locutus sim, et fecerim.
37
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Adhuc in hoc invenient me domus Israël, ut faciam eis:
multiplicabo eos sicut gregem hominum,
38
ut gregem sanctum,
ut gregem Jerusalem in solemnitatibus ejus:
sic erunt civitates desertæ, plenæ gregibus hominum:
et scient quia ego Dominus.
